Ankle sprain, prevention, causes and treatments

It is the most frequent injury to the ligaments of the ankle, caused by solicitation beyond its limits of elasticity due to a sudden and unexpected movement (twisting) of the joint.

Our collaborator Healthing tells us in this article about ankle sprain, pathology that, being of traumatic origin, no matter how fit we are and how correct the training we do, no one is free to suffer.

There are several specific movements that can cause a sprained ankle; the most frequent usually occurs in Foot inversion movements (plantar flexion + supination + internal rotation). When this happens, the most affected ligamentous structures are especially three: the calcaneal peroneal ligament and the anterior and posterior talofibular ligaments, which provide all the stability of the ankle in its most lateral part.

Ankle sprain

Many triathletes and specifically during the race, ankle sprains usually occur in this area, originating in most cases small sprains, which should not be underestimated, since being repetitive they can generate joint instability. It is essential to be clear about the main concepts of a ankle sprain to have a quick recovery and return to sports activity.

¿ What is it ?

It is the most frequent injury to the ligaments of the ankle, caused by solicitation beyond its limits of elasticity due to a sudden and unexpected movement (twisting) of the joint.

Depending on the degree of affectation, it can be classified as:

Grade I: ligament distension.

Grade II: the ligament suffers tear or partial rupture.

Grado III: complete rupture of the ligament. Complete rupture of the ligament can cause a dislocation if joint congruence is completely lost.

Degrees Ankle Sprain

In grade III sprains, impotence is maximum, and any sporting activity must be stopped for a prolonged period, while grade II sprains vary according to the size of the break as well as its location.

How do we treat it?

The main objective of our treatment is the early functional recovery to avoid late complications. For this, we designed a individualized treatment plan depending on the degree of injury and the needs of each patient, based on the manual therapy (lymphatic drainage, osteopathic manipulations, mobilizations ...) Game Ready application (cryotherapy + pressotherapy) and high-power laser sessions To eliminate inflammation and pain as soon as possible, restore mobility to all joints of the ankle and foot and avoid prolonged inactivity.

In some patients, for the prompt and correct healing of the ligament we perform ultrasound guided percutaneous electrolysis y neuromodulation techniques.

In a second phase, the treatment focuses on the proprioceptive work and muscular empowerment, as well as in the sports rehabilitation for which we help ourselves with the platform Imoove.

Our recommendation, both for those who have already suffered a sprain and for those who have been fortunate enough not to suffer them, is undoubtedly incorporate in your routine the work of proprioception and strengthening of the ankles to prevent this injury, to the extent that it is within our reach and avoid relapses or minimize their effects.
