Typical triathlon injuries

Our collaborator FisioPinar tells us in this article the most typical injuries suffered by the triathlete

Triathlon is an individual, combined and endurance sport that has more followers every year. It consists of three sports modalities: open water swimming, cycling and running. Therefore the injuries will be divided into three groups, since in each of these modes operate muscle groups and different factors.

SWIMMING

The most common style is the crawl. As a result of a technical or evil good gesture overload and lack of phase of rest during training, may cause tendinopathies of the rotator cuff and even calcium accumulations in the tendon forming the famous calcifications.

Also, attention to the hyperlaxities that are provoked in the joint capsule that may lead to a shoulder dislocation.

How to prevent?

We can prevent by strengthening more analytically the muscles of the shoulder and being careful with the joint gesture and overtraining.

CYCLING

Apart from traumatic injuries caused by falls (mainly fissures or fractures of the ribs, wrists, elbow and clavicle), non-traumatic injuries mainly consist of spinal injuries due to the  kyphotic position on the bike (neck pain due to activation of trapezius trigger points, thoracolumbar muscle overload, hernias and protrusions); and lower limb problems almost always caused by inadequate saddle height and by excessive workouts, such as chondromalacia patella, patellar, achilles, goose foot and iliotibial band tendinopathies.

How to prevent?

In general, we prevent by checking the training, reducing the intensity, correcting the position of the saddle and the pedal, and analytical strengthening of the muscles.

CARRERA

Perhaps the modality that creates more injuries due to the biomechanics of each individual. The most common are achilles tendinopathies, hamstring, Of Iliotibial band y patellar Y , plantar fasciitis y warm periostitis

Also very frequent are hamstring and triceps sural muscle tears (calves and soleus). In the trunk we can find pyramidal syndrome, pubalgia and even stress fractures of the sacrum.

How to prevent?

To avoid this type of injury, pay attention to footwear, it would be advisable to study the footprint in the trusted podiatrist and try rest phases and intervals. As in the other modalities, a more specific training of the muscles involved helps us prevent injuries.

The important thing is to diagnose your time going to trusted professional and make a multidisciplinary approach for optimum results. The sooner lesions are treated the sooner they will disappear!

In next articles we will tell you how to treat each of these sports injuries.
