In our sport, triathlon, it is very common to suffer various ailments and many of them occur in the tendons.

Our collaborator Healthing, tells us in this article the benefits of shock wave therapy in injuries suffered in the tendons.

It is usual that those who practice sports, at some point we have noticed discomfort in our tendons, what is popularly known as "tendinitis"Of diverse location, in the Achilles tendon, in the patellar tendon or even pain in the heel of the foot ("Fascitis"). This type of ailment, as well as incapacitating, may have a longer recovery period than desired. Therefore, today we will talk about a physiotherapy technique that shortens the recovery times of tendinopathies: shock waves.

This therapy is a type of non-invasive treatment, based on the application of high energy acoustic impulses (such as lithotripsy systems).

The high intensity sound waves they act in the interfaces of the different structures, in this case in the tendon, obtaining beneficial effects such as:

  • Effect analgesic (decrease in pain)
  • Effect anti-inflammatory (controlled inflammatory response to activate the tissue repair response)
  • Stimulation of the rtissue egeneration (proliferation of tenocytes)
  • Disintegration of calcium depositsor (fragmentation and cavitation of calcifications)
  • Effect antifibrotic.

In addition to these positive processes, shock waves possess osteogenesis capacity (process of bone formation) and neovascularization (stimulation of vascularization) so other indications in addition to tendinopathies (tendinitis, tendon calcifications, fasciitis ...) are:

  • Bursitis
  • Diseases of growth development: Osgood Schlatter, Sever ...
  • Osteonecrosis
  • Calcaneal spur
  • Haglund
  • Neuropathies due to entrapment or similar: disc hernias, carpal tunnel syndrome, Morton's neuroma, etc.
  • Delayed bone healing

The treatment with shock waves has numerous studies that endorse it as a very effective tool, do you dare to try them?
