Challenge Salou 2026 launches club aquathlon
El Challenge Salou – Costa Daurada 2026 will incorporate an Aquathlon Distance on May 9, a new test of 1.000 meters of swimming and 5 kilometers of running that will be the National Championship of Catalonia for Clubs.
Challenge Salou It expands its program for 2026 with a new feature that reinforces the importance of the weekend beyond middle and short distance.
The organization has confirmed the entry of Aquathlon Distance, a competition that will take place on Saturday, May 9th at 17:00 PM in the Llevant Beach in Salou and that, in this first edition within the event, it will also have the status of National Club Championship of Catalonia.
The race will take place in the heart of the event, with a route linking the beach to the promenade. On paper, the format is simple and straightforward: 1.000 meters of swimming followed by 5 kilometers of foot race.
In practice, this means adding a new competitive block to the Salou weekend and opening the door to different types of athletes, from regular federated athletes to popular participants.
A new competitive front for Saturday
The arrival of this aquathlon fits well into the evolution of Challenge Salou as an event with various formats.
Until now, the main focus had been on Sunday's testing. Middle Distance y Short DistanceBut this addition gives more substance to Saturday and makes the event an even more complete weekend for clubs, triathletes and companions.
It's not just about adding another race to the program. The fact that the event is National Club Championship of Catalonia It gives it a clear competitive advantage from the first year.
In this case, the team classification will be established by adding up the times of the three best aquathletes from each club, both in the male and female categories, following the regulations of the Federació Catalana de Triatló.
This introduces an interesting tactical interpretation. Having a standout player at the top will no longer be enough. Clubs aspiring to the title will need cohesion, depth, and consistency.
In such a short format, where any mistake carries a lot of weight, the composition of the team can make all the difference.
A race open to registered athletes, amateurs and relay teams
Another of the strengths of the new Aquathlon Distance is that it has not been designed as a closed race only for top licenses or clubs.
The test will bring together registered athletes, popular participants and also relay teams, which greatly expands its reach.
There will be individual male and female classifications, open categories for non-federated athletes, as well as a Open category and a Couples category, with prizes for the best male, female and mixed teams.
This approach means that aquathlon is not limited to the Catalan club championship, but can also attract athletes who want to compete in a more affordable and explosive format within the Challenge environment.
For many, in fact, it can be an attractive entry point. The combination of swimming and running eliminates the cycling segment and simplifies logistics, which often makes it easier for novice triathletes or athletes coming from a single discipline to participate.
Cash prizes for the best clubs
The organization also wanted to give weight to the collective competition with financial prizes for the best ranked clubs.
They will be divided 250 euros for the winning club, 150 euros for the second y 100 euros for third place, in both the male and female categories.
Along with that, there will also be recognition for the faster sectors of the day, that is, swimming, T1 transition, and running, for both men and women, in addition to the individual overall podium finishes. It's a way of adding smaller objectives within a short, intense, and highly visual event for the public.
What does registration include?
The registration will include several elements that are common in this type of event: official technical t-shirt, gym sack, swimming cap, 226ERS nutrition pack, can of Red Bullbib number and information material, among other services aimed at participants.
Beyond the details of the package, the important thing is that the aquathlon enters the Challenge Salou ecosystem with its own identity and the capacity to generate activity from Saturday afternoon onwards. This can benefit both the overall atmosphere of the event and the presence of clubs and athletes throughout the weekend.
Salou is gaining popularity as a full weekend getaway destination
With this addition, Challenge Salou – Costa Daurada reinforces its status as a multi-format event. Saturday takes center stage with a short, fast race open to different skill levels, while Sunday will remain reserved for the main distances of the program.
Taken as a whole, the move makes sense. Salou not only wants to be a recognized venue for middle-distance triathletes, but also a broader meeting point for clubs, federated athletes, and amateurs. This new aquathlon is part of that strategy.
Registrations are now open at the official website of the event.
