Biomechanics of cycling: How to position the angle of the seat tube?

A delayed seat tube causes most of the weight to be in the rear wheel, this allows for greater stability and control of the bike, so it is important to adjust it in the correct position.

Our collaborator Rebook Performance Tell us this time how to adjust the angle of the bicycle seat tube correctly.

One of the most important aspects when choosing a bicycle is the seat tube angle, since it will not only affect the distribution of body weights on the wheels, but also the action of pedaling.

In this box we can see the usual angles depending on the different types of bicycle:

Table Angle Saddle Bicycle

A tube of delayed saddle makes most of the weight is on the rear wheel, this allows a greater stability and control of the bike.

However a front seat tube makes the weight of the body falls more on the handlebar, making the bicycle is more nervous and unstable, but in turn you enjoy a greater aerodynamics

Position of the Saddle on the bicycle

However, if we talk about pedaling efficiency, the research says that the opposite is better. In a study conducted in the year 2000 (Garside and Doran) with Olympic distance triathletes it compared the pedaling in a angle of 73 and another of 81 degrees on an indoor bicycle to avoid changes due to aerodynamics. It was found that the performance in cycling it improved an 2%, but in the subsequent 10km race it even surpassed the 7%.

In another subsequent study on cyclists (Ricard et al, 2006), but with positions of 72 and 82 degrees, it was possible to verify by electromyography that the muscle activation for the same workload in the most advanced position was lower, even reducing an 42% in the femoral biceps.

Study (Ricard et al, 2006)

As a summary:

  • If you feel insecure on your bicycle it is perhaps advisable to use a bicycle that has the Saddle angle more delayed or even delay the saddle as much as possible. With this change the bicycle will be more stable.
  • If what you want is improve pedaling efficiency aDelanta the saddle to get better results and perform less muscle activation.

Any of the changes in bicycle biomechanics, especially if they are going to be abrupt, should be supervised by a professional to advise the best guidelines to perform and find the best option between efficiency, stability and comfort.
