Feel pains in the side, flatulence

What can cause punctures in the side?

Our collaborator Victory Endurance, through Dr. Alberto Sacristán tells us in this article the possible causes and solutions for the pains in the side, such as flatus.

There are several causes that can cause pain in the side, in the thorax. We can think about the exercise, when we breathe badly, a muscular pull, gas, pneumonia, pneumothorax, pleural problems (wrapping of the lungs), ...

The pain in the side can be of different types, such as puncture-type pain, which is usually located at a specific point. When it is of these characteristics, it is usually due to pain at the muscular level, specifically the intercostal muscles.

Can it be caused by nerves or stress?

Indeed, these situations can generate muscle tension, including contractures of the thoracic musculature, causing pain. It can also cause certain digestive disorders, with increased production of gases, or movements of the esophagus, causing pain.

Is there any way to distinguish a puncture-type pain from another type of pain?

When the pain is musculoskeletal, often the only symptom is pain, but if the cause is different, it is usually associated with another type of symptomatology such as respiratory distress (dyspnea), cough, fever, sweating, ...

Is it relevant that the punctures are on a certain side or at a certain height?

Yes, the exact location of the puncture can have a clinical significance. It is a routine question of the doctor when a patient comes for chest pain. Can you point out where it hurts? For example, if the pain is at the base of the lungs, it may mean that it is a neural problem.

What should we do if we notice these punctures?

We must remain calm and observe if other symptoms appear (cough, fever, respiratory difficulty, ...) assess how the pain has started (abruptly or progressively) if the pain is modified with movements, the location, ..

When do we have to go to the doctor?

If the pain is severe, or lasts more than 24 hours you should consult your doctor. There are other symptoms that should be warning signs for us. These are symptoms that we have already mentioned such as respiratory distress, fever, dizziness, pain radiating to the neck, shoulder, ...

Can breathing help?

Yes, in many cases as in situations of anxiety, stress even in muscle pain can improve pain with deep, slow breathing.

What is flatus?

It is the pain that appears in the upper right quadrant of the abdomen, below the ribs. The pain usually appears with exercise and disappears when you stop exercising. There are several theories about how flatus appears. Some refer that it may be by eating or drinking before exercising more or less intense. Others report that it is by drinking carbonated drinks. Others report that it is by a stretching of the ligaments between the diaphragm and the internal organs.

How to prevent them?

Space the food about 2 hours before exercise. Avoid carbonated drinks. A very important aspect is to perform adequate breathing, according to the intensity of the exercise.

In case you give us flatulence in our sports practice, we should decrease the pace, the intensity, try to breathe more deeply and slowly. We can also press with the hand the area where the pain is and slightly bend the trunk forward.
