The IRONMAN franchise is reportedly considering progressively implementing controlled-access portable toilets in the aid stations of its international events starting in the 2026 season.
According to information obtained by Triathlon News, the system would initially be applied in high-participation events and would be linked to a small additional cost for the athlete.
The objective, according to this approach, would be to improve waste management, reduce queues at critical points along the route, and minimize the environmental impact generated by current chemical toilet systems in trials with thousands of participants.
For some triathletes, this service could provide a strategic advantage in the race, especially in the final kilometers of the marathon, where the use of gels can always backfire.
Access via bib number and payment gateway
The system would be simple. Triathletes wishing to use these "premium" restrooms could activate them beforehand during the registration process or directly on race day through a payment gateway linked to their race number.
Access would be granted via a QR code printed on the bib or loaded onto the official tracking device, allowing control of the flow of use and preventing massive access that could overwhelm the aid stations.
The organizers indicate that the cost would be symbolic and would cover cleaning, maintenance, and restocking during the race.
Reducing paper use and opting for cleaning taps
Another argument being considered is the reduction of toilet paper consumption, one of the most problematic waste products at these types of events.
Instead, the bathrooms would have small cleaning taps, a solution already common in other sports and which would significantly reduce the volume of waste generated during the competition.
