IRONMAN aims for 50% female participation and launches Woven

IRONMAN has launched Woven, a new global initiative that seeks to increase the presence of women in triathlon and move towards starting lines where men and women are equally represented.

The project, presented on September 30, was born after collecting the opinions of around 10.000 women linked to endurance sports to find out what barriers make it difficult for more athletes to start, stay and progress within triathlon.

IRONMAN's long-term vision is to reach starting lines made up of 50% women , although the organization has not announced a specific timeframe for achieving that goal.

Visibility, community, and a better race experience

Woven is structured around three areas: increasing the visibility and representation of women , improving their experience at events, and building a global community that works both online and in person.

Previous research has revealed some of the barriers identified. Forty percent of the female athletes surveyed cited greater visibility as one of the main factors promoting female participation, while 71% stated they would prefer to train with a partner.

The study also identified practical issues that can affect the experience during a competition. Among the measures IRONMAN is incorporating into its standard procedures are menstrual products, private changing areas, women-only restrooms, and lactation facilities upon request.

A free community for women of all levels

Membership in Woven will be free and open to both women considering starting triathlon and experienced athletes.

The program will offer online forums, educational content, webinars, exclusive events, a private community on Strava, and different experiences linked to specific IRONMAN 70.3 races.

Woven also begins with an international network of 36 ambassadors : seven experts and 29 athletes selected to help develop and connect the community.

Women currently make up 18% of IRONMAN distance athletes

The starting point illustrates the scale of the challenge. According to data released by IRONMAN, women represent approximately 18% of participants in full-distance IRONMAN races and 26% in IRONMAN 70.3.

Woven aims to take action before an athlete even considers qualifying for a World Championship: on the reasons that may influence her to start practicing triathlon, find a community to train with, or decide to stay in the sport.

From the debate about slots to increasing the number of women on the starting line

Woven's launch comes after IRONMAN has also had to address the differences between men and women in its World Championship qualification system.

In November 2025, the organization modified the qualification system for the 2026 IRONMAN World Championship after detecting imbalances in the allocation of places between both sexes.

IRONMAN later explained why it had decided to revise the slot system , introducing separate performance groups for men and women.

Woven now takes that debate to an earlier stage. The question is no longer just how World Championship slots are allocated among those competing to qualify, but how to get more women onto the starting lines of long-distance triathlons in the first place.

The growth of that participation and the experience of the athletes themselves will be the main references to see in the coming years how close IRONMAN can get to its aspiration of 50% balanced starting lines.
