Eight ways to be in Los Angeles 2028

World Triathlon has established eight different paths to qualify for the Olympics. The numbers are the same for men and women.

The United States will have two places as host country.
There will two places for the 2026 mixed relay world champions and other Two for the 2027 champions (with a "roll down" system if they are not eligible).

The Olympic mixed relay ranking will award 16 places, guaranteeing continental representation if the country is within the top 15.

The individual Olympic ranking will grant 21 places to the 21 highest ranked and eligible athletes as of May 18, 2028.

Up to two universal places through the Tripartite Commission.
A new route opens for LA28 with up to five places for “New Flag” nations in the Continental Games (one per continent).

Other five seats Olympic committees that do not yet have a quota may be assigned via the World Triathlon ranking.

It is important to remember that The places belong to the National Olympic Committeesnot the athletes. Each country will decide which triathletes will ultimately represent their delegation in Los Angeles, where the events will be held on July 15 (women), July 16 (men) and July 20 (mixed relay) of 2028.

A demanding system that remained open until the very last year

The system maintains the philosophy of previous cycles, but introduces adjustments that reinforce the importance of the mixed relay and the continental games.

The key will be consistency over two full seasons and knowing how to balance calendar between WTCs, World Cups and continental championships.

The real race to LA28 begins in May 2026. And, as always in Olympic triathlon, qualification will not be decided in a single event, but through consistency over two years.
