The Spanish Triathlon Federation has published the selection criteria for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, which will set the course for Spanish triathletes during the next Olympic cycle.
The document, prepared by the Technical Directorate of FETRI, establishes the sporting conditions that will be taken into account to form the Spanish triathlon team in Los Angeles 2028.
The Olympic qualification period will begin on May 18th 2026 and the May 18th 2028, a two-year window in which international results, individual ranking and performance in mixed relays will have a direct impact.
The mixed relay is gaining importance on the road to the Olympics
One of the most important points of the document is that the allocation of places will not be based solely on individual performance. The Spanish Triathlon Federation (FETRI) indicates that the construction of the Olympic team will take into account the team as a whole and the importance of the... mixed relay within the Olympic program.
The main objective will be to maximize the number of places per gender, up to a maximum of three, and to set up a competitive team for both individual events and the mixed relay.
To be eligible for Olympic selection, athletes must be among the Top 160 in the World Triathlon Ranking as of May 18, 2028, meet the requirements of World Triathlon, the International Olympic Committee and the Spanish Olympic Committee, and have represented Spain during the qualification period.
The positions will be for the country, not for specific individuals.
The document highlights an important aspect of the Olympic system: the places obtained belong to the country, in this case Spain, and are not automatically assigned to the athlete who achieves them.
This means that the FETRI Technical Directorate will have leeway to propose the final team composition based on the published criteria, the form, the contribution to the team and the strategic needs of the selection.
The Federation also contemplates that the allocation of places may be communicated provisionally during the qualification period, always depending on the sporting evolution and compliance with the established criteria.
What will be taken into account for the Spanish selection
The selection criteria will be applied differently in the male and female categories, with specific sections for each.
Among the factors listed in the document are the final position in the Olympic qualification ranking, the competitive potential in the individual event, the contribution to the mixed relay, and the tactical configuration of the team.

Different criteria for men and women
In the men's category, the first criterion considers the best Spanish athlete at the Los Angeles 2027 Test Event, provided he achieves a top 3or the highest-ranked Spaniard in the individual Olympic qualification ranking as of December 31, 2027, provided that he is in the top 8.
In the women's category, that first criterion is adapted to a top 8 in the Los Angeles 2027 Test Event or the best Spanish woman in the individual Olympic ranking as of December 31, 2027, provided she is in the top 12.
In both cases, the subsequent criteria incorporate the ranking position at the end of the qualification period and the significant contribution to the national team in mixed relay events.
Ratification of the state of form in 2028
The FETRI also includes a ratification of form in the 2028 season. Athletes who are eligible to receive a place must confirm their competitive level up to three months before the Olympic Games.
In the men's category, that ratification could come with a top 12 in WTCS, an Top 5 in the World Cup or equivalent tests that will be published by the end of 2027.
In the female category, the document sets as a reference a top 15 in WTCS, an Top 5 in the World Cup or equivalent tests.
The criteria for the Melilla European Youth Championship have also been updated.
FETRI has also updated the criteria related to the Melilla 2026 European Youth Championship, an important event for the youth categories.
El XXIV Ferrol TriathlonThe event, scheduled for July 18, will be one of the key tests in determining the Spanish Youth team that will compete in Melilla. Its results will be combined with those obtained at the Spanish Youth Triathlon Championship in A Coruña.
The full document of the Olympic criteria can be found on the FETRI website: Selection criteria for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
With this publication, Spanish triathlon enters fully into the Olympic cycle towards Los Angeles 2028, with a model where individual performance will continue to be key, but where the mixed relay and the overall construction of the team will have an increasingly greater weight.
