Isla Cristina will host the 'Iberian Triathlon' to be played between Spain and Portugal

This edition of the International Tourism Fair (FITUR), presents the 'I Iberian Triathlon' that will take place between Portugal and Spain, with the goal in Isla Cristina.

Despite being scheduled for next October, there are already registered 1.000 triathletes, among which the World Duathlon Champion, the Huelva-born Emilio Martín, who will also sponsor the difficult event.

According to the island council in a statement, participants will begin early in the morning with a swimming race along the Guadiana River and then climb onto a bike and complete 180 kilometres through the Portuguese Algarve and Ayamonte, where, on foot and via the Vía Verde Litoral, they will compete in the last part of the race, a 42-kilometre marathon that will pass through La Redondela and the beaches of Isla Cristina, and that will reach the centre of the city. The island's Municipal Sports Service has scheduled a series of parallel activities in the same town, to complete the ambitious sports programme for the day.

According to Councilman Sports of the City Council, Juan Garcia, "will be a spectacular test, throughout the day of competition the roads, beaches and villages of the region will be full of athletes of a high sport level, accompanied by a large technical deployment and security that, surely, will awaken the curiosity of citizens.

The island mayor also made a "positive" economic balance "because 1.000 athletes and members of the organization that will move, we must unite the family members who accompany them and have already booked rooms in hotels in the area, reactivating, thus the local economy ". "We estimate," he said, "an influx of around 3000 people."

And although the ambitious sports project is economically costly, the Island City Council "will not entail any disbursement", since, from the Municipal Sports Service and the Council itself "have put all the mechanisms to be self-financed with the inscriptions of the participants and the collaborations of the Provincial Tourist Board of the Provincial Council of Huelva and private companies such as the Barceló Hotel in Isla Cristina, among others
