The young French cyclist Mathieu Riebel (Shell Pacific) has died this Friday after suffering a accident in the ninth stage of the Tour of New Caledonia, which is being played on this French ocean island.

As the race explained through a statement, Riebel stopped on the descent of Col de la Pirogue to wait for his teammate Erwan Brenterch, who had suffered a mechanical problem, and help him rejoin the peloton.

Both resumed the march, took a lot of speed and finished impacting an ambulance that was traveling in the opposite direction. As a result of the impact, Riebel, 20, died on the spot, while Brenterch only broke one leg and was evacuated to a nearby hospital.

The 47th edition of the Tour of New Caledonia, which started the 11 in October with some 60 local and international runners at the starting line, decided suspend the last stage, that was going to be disputed this Saturday, after the death of Riebel, who was junior champion of France in 2015.
