The Popular Party has presented a Law Proposal to toughen the penalties for drivers who run over cyclists, proposing to increase the prison term to nine years if they cause several fatalities and to create a specific crime of leaving the scene of the accident.

To this day, the driver who runs over a cyclist being at fault faces a maximum of four years If I had no background. This week we could see, as they left in freedom with charges to a cdrifter drunk without a license and who was on the run after running over a cyclist.

The Minister of Justice, Rafael Catalá, explained at a press conference together with the Minister of the Interior, Juan Ignacio Zoido, and the spokesman of the PP in Congress, Rafael Hernando, this proposal of the Organic Law for mWrite the Penal Code in matters of imprudence in the driving of motor vehicles and mopeds and sanctions if the accident site is abandoned.

The initiative improves the definition of serious and very serious recklessness, from which penalties will later be derived, considering as such driving at excessive speed or with drug consumption and high alcohol rates.

The popular group also proposes introducing the crime of abandoning the scene of the accident on the road, "for understanding that it is a different conduct" from the imprudence committed, and punishing it for "the intrinsic evil in the abandonment of those who know that they are leaving behind someone who could be injured or even deceased”, providing for up to four years in prison, according to the text.

"We were aware of the convenience and need to reform the Penal Code to provide an adequate response to behaviors that cause very serious injuries and loss of life, since they did not have it," said Catalá, who, like Zoido, has considered this "prudent and moderate" proposal and has announced that it will be processed "as soon as possible".
