1985 - Cascais Triathlon: one of the oldest triathlons on the planet

We interview Jorge Paulo Pereira, organizer of the event that will be held next September 24

CASCAIS TRIATHLON is one of the oldest in the world Since when is this test?

The first meeting was held at 1985, and at the 1989 it was the European Triathlon Championship. After 14 editions this test happened to be held in the town of Estoril, communicated by Cascais to scarce 2 km by the coast. In the year 2010 disappeared to go back to celebrate in the 2013 again in Estoril

And since when do you know the exciting world of Triathlon?

It all started at the 2005, at the 2010 it was when I raced at the Austrian Ironman, that's when I discovered the strong spirit of Triathlon. "Suffer" and "Enjoy" at the same time.

How did the idea of ​​retaking the Cascais Triathlon arise?

My experience in the Ironman of Austria was like the "Beauty and the Beast" many feelings that help you understand the triathlete and what you are looking for and it was at this moment where I wanted to project my experience in a sporting event and so I decided to take the reins of the test in the 2013, after 3 years without triathlon.

How did you start?

First "Swim Challenge" was born, as a swim cruise, in the 2012 and then we organized the Estoril Triathlon, in Super-Sprint and Olympic distance, Portugal Championship

In the 2015 came the first edition of Cascais, with Media Distancia, Olímpico and Super Sprint.

This 2016 we have also added the aquatlon for children and Sprint distance to be held on Saturday, scoring test of the Cup of Portugal. Sunday will be the National Championship of MD and Olympic distance without drafting.

But, organizing a sporting event of this magnitude is a lot of work. Do you have help?

Yes of course! We are a very united team that works with passion for a common goal that was at first to be able to resume this triathlon and now that it is recognized and that more and more people can enjoy its spectacular landscapes.  

The soul of the test is undoubtedly the two most important local clubs, the Humanitarian Association of Bombeiros dos Estoris, where the project was born and the great Estoril Praia Triatlo club, they who are next to me day after day working to make this event perfect. We also have the support of local institutions, the City Council of Cascais, the Board of Freguesia Cascais –Estoril, and the Tourism of Portugal, as well as the inhabitants and all the merchants in the area, who support the event.

If you were looking for a unique triathlon to compete, would you recommend CASCAIS TRIATHLON?

Without a doubt. Cascais and its surroundings are spectacular. Castles, palaces, a brutal nature on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean with white sands and clean waters ……… Cascais undoubtedly surprises and is a unique place with art, culture… that welcomes young people, families and all kinds of athletes. Whoever comes to compete I am sure that afterwards they will “repeat vacations” or to train to enjoy a few days of rest, it is an area that falls in love and a test that must be done once in a lifetime.
