The media triathlete from Madrid has announced that it will be in the first edition of the Challenge Madrid next 24 in September.

Alejandro Santamaría in a veteran triathlete who has 4 world champion titles (Junior, Sub 23 and by teams), 2 times Champion of Spain and with 25 world championships behind him, as well as two participations in the Hawaii Ironman and 25 long distance events behind him with several victories, podiums and Top 10.

For this reason we have done an interview to ask him about the test since he knows in depth the circuits where it runs,

In what year did you do your first triathlon?

In 1993 I did my first Triathlon with 15 years, it was a Sprint and the memory was incredible. Then at 1996, when I was still very young, I started doing medium distance triathlons.

Highlights in Media and Long Distance.

I have been 2 times champion of Spain of Long Distance and many other second. I have finished 25 Ironman with several podiums all over the world and I won the Full of Vitoria. Recently I also finished 4º in the European Media Distancia at 2014.

Your previous experience with km0 with respect to the circuits.

The circuits are really spectacular. To take it easy and enjoy the day with the bike. After the race on foot is perfect to run for Madrid river with the best goal straight that we could dream at the Puerta del Sol.

Some tips for the test

  • This is a test to enjoy Madrid. The first part of the bike is the hardest, you have to save forces to maintain good pace in the last 80km of plain.
  • If you spend in the ports you will win a couple of minutes, but afterwards you can make it eternal until you reach T2.
  • If you can take watts it would be perfect to control the ideal rhythm.
  • After the Walking race is always the hardest, but this time I think be easier because the circuit is bearable and we much public to cheer up.
  • The most important thing is always dose the rhythm throughout the test and especially bring a good nutrition plan to provide all the necessary energy to be able hold the rhythm through.

What do you think about the change of the route of the race on foot?

The route is similar, it is still flat and in the same area. There are not many differences and the main course is at the end with the main street plagued by the public.

Have you ever competed in Challenge events?

Yes, many times. I was already a year in Challenge Vitoria where I stayed 2º and a long time ago in the Challenge Roth queen test in 2003 where I did 7º with 2h43 in marathon. They know how to do things very well.

What do you think a brand like Challenge brings to a triathlon?

Surely it will give more name and prestige to the test. It is a guarantee of success and quality

How does it feel to compete in your city?

We will have a lot of well-known public cheering and that always gives a plus.

But besides being my city I think that for all of us it is a special circuit that we have to take advantage of. The bike route through this emblematic circuit, running through Madrid and the best; the goal at the door of the sun. It is to not miss the opportunity.

Alejandro sure will give a lot to talk about in the test that will be played next September 24
