Two-time Olympic champion and next month's favorite for the Ironman 70.3 Alistair Brownlee has announced that he will undergo surgery on Saturday for a chronic hip problem and will resign for the rest of the season.

In an Instagram post, the 29-year-old British triathlete wrote: “Tomorrow is a big day. After years of struggling with a chronic hip problem, I'm going to operate.

It was a difficult decision. Unfortunately I will not be able to compete for the rest of the year, but I hope that this operation will allow me to continue doing what I love for many years. In the meantime I'm going to enjoy some Yorkshir relaxationE"

Late last year, in an interview with the BBC, Brownlee announced that he would stop competing in ITU races for two years to focus on long and medium distance events.

This year Alistair showed his quality in these distances, achieving victory in the Ironman 70.3 Sant George 70.3 a Lionel Sanders and last month he won the World Series in Leeds, his hometown, ahead of his brother Jonny who finished second. This year he was one of the top favorites to win the Ironman World Championship 70.3

In addition to missing out on the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Chattanooga, he will also miss the second round of the Super League Triathlon in September, which will be held near his hometown in Jersey, UK.
