This weekend, Banyoles hosts the European Youth Triathlon and Sub23 Championships

Banyoles is preparing to host one of the biggest European events of the year, the European Youth Triathlon Championship and Sub23 the next 25 and 26 in July.

During the weekend, the competition will hold a total of eight competitions, five of which are international. An event that will be around the 600 registered, with international 224 and national 375.

Athletes come from different 23 European teams: Slovenia, Portugal, Switzerland, Austria, Israel, United Kingdom, Italy, Russia, Denmark, Belgium, Ireland, Germany, Czech Republic, Sweden, Hungary, Slovakia, Venezuela, Ukraine, New Zealand, Poland, Belarus, France and Spain. To this is added the presence of 39 coaches of the different teams that will accompany their teams throughout the weekend. Banyoles, as the headquarters of the championship, has experienced a growth of 32% in its hotel occupancy and the rest of the Pla de l'Estany region, an 2,5%.

In relation to international competitions, during the day of Saturday we will be able to see in action the Sub23 categories, starting at 16 hours with the females. An exit list that will bring together a total of 34 participants. Then, from the 19 hours, 52 triathletes will dive in the waters of the iconic lake of Banyoles to undertake the fight for the continental scepter.

The day of Saturday will have started with a triathlon qualifier for Spanish Triathlon Championship in the modalities female, male, followed by an open test, gathering among them 317 participants, the inscriptions for which will be closed on Thursday. The Flash Triathlon test will be held immediately after, at 11.30 hours, with 10 enrolled.

On Sunday, the second and last day of the championship, it will be the turn for some of the most exciting competitions, with the Sub23 relay dispute that will feature 48 participants and the competitions in Youth category that will gather 90 young triathletes. At the level of Catalan competition, on Sunday at 11 hours will take place the Catalan Children's Championship, with 48 registered athletes.

The hotel occupancy of Banyoles grows an 32%

The celebration of the Triathlon makes an 32% the hotel occupation in Banyoles for next weekend, and an 2,5% in the rest of the Pla de l'Estany region, reaching a level of occupancy of 90% in Banyoles and 68% in the rest of the region. This is explained because the athlete looks for accommodation as close as possible to the event, which takes them to the city of Banyoles.

The type of accommodation that has experienced a superior occupation for the Triathlon have been hotels, hostels, hostels, cottages and campsites. Regarding the nationalities, the hosted athletes will be from the rest of Spain and other European countries, such as Portugal, Sweden or Germany. They are data provided by the 92% of the establishments in the city.

Quality sports tourism

The city of Banyoles, which was already the Olympic sub-site of the Barcelona Olympic Games 1992, has a long tradition of organizing major sporting events in sports such as rowing, canoeing, triathlon, swimming and cycling. The list includes the Rowing World Cup the 2009 year, the 2010 Marathon World Canoe Championship, the 2011 Triathlon European Cup, the 2012 Triathlon World Cup and the Triathlon European Cup in 2013 and 2014.

The Association of European Capitals of Sport (ACES), a non-profit association recognized by the European Commission, has awarded Banyoles the seal of European Villa of Sport 2015. The municipality of Banyoles has also been distinguished as the headquarters of the Olympic Studies Center of the University of Girona (UdG), a center with the aim of promoting research and study in the fields of sports and education. The constitution of the center will favor the participation of Banyoles in joint academic activities with the 31 network of Olympic Studies Centers of other Spanish universities and, also, with those of other European centers.
