Last Saturday at the WTS in Yokohama began the qualification period for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games

In the following article we want to explain to you how it isl classification system for Games Olympic de Tokyo year 2020. The first thing that stands out is that for the first time the relief mixed, that is, since the triathlon was part of the Olympic calendar in Sidney 2000 there were only two triathlon competitions, the female and male Olympic distance. In the Japanese appointment within two years is also included the mixed relay consisting of 2 women and 2 men.

Before explaining how the seats for Tokyo 2020 are divided, we must mention two considerations that we must bear in mind. The first thing is that the squares are always for the country, not for the triathlete. Each national federation decides which triathletes represent them in the Olympic Games. The other consideration is that we are going to quote the ITU criteria, but this they can be different in each national federation when selecting its athletes.

The inclusion of mixed relay in the Olympic program has caused a number of seats is destined only and exclusively to this competition, but lThe triathletes competing in the relay must be the same as in the individual Olympic distance test. It could also be the case that classified triathletes competing in the mixed relay, then do not do it in the individual test, the regulation does not oblige.

How is the classification for Tokyo 2020?

In total there will be 110 seats, 55 for men and 55 for women. The maximum number of triathletes that a country can classify are 6, three men and three women. There will be two main rankings, one of mixed relay selections and one individual.

The qualifying period for the mixed relay starts the June 7 with the ITU World Triathlon Mixed Relay Series event and will end the 31 March 2020. While the individual Olympic ranking period began in the past WTS of Yokohama and will end the 11 of May of 2020

How are the 55 seats divided by sex?

Places for the mixed relay

  • 14 places (2 triathletes by country) for the 7 best countries in the Olympic ranking mixed relay
  • 6 places (2 per country) for the 3 countries that win the classification event for the Mixed Relay and are not within the 7 countries. The event will be between the 1 of April 2020 and 11 Mayo 2020.

Individual seats

  • 26 places for the 26 best of the individual Olympic ranking that do not have a place for the mixed relay.
  • 5 places by new flag (one per continent for those who do not have representation in the above criteria.) The triathlete must be at least among the best 140 ranking.
  • 2 places for organizing country (Japan), which if not classified by the above criteria would be the 8º team in mixed relays
  • 2 invitation of the tripartite commission, the triathlete must be among the 180 ranking

If we do the sum, it will be 14 + 6 + 26 + 5 + 2 + 2 = 55 places in total (the same system for men and women, 55 places by sex)
