The Valencian triathlete has bet this year to focus on mid-distance tests getting outstanding results nationally and internationally and for next year his goal will be the Ironman World Championship 70.3

In 2015, Emilio Aguayo he was proclaimed Champion of Spain of Average distance and this year has taken the step to focus on tests of MD, getting to win again in the triathlon Valencia 113, being second in Buelna and third in Orihuela - Miguel Hernández. He has also obtained brilliant results in the two large franchises of medium and long distance, got the second position in the Challange of Salou and a few weeks ago he was also second in the Club la Santa Ironman Lanzarote.

A couple of years ago you proclaimed MD Spain champion but this 2017 is when you have focused more on non-drafting tests. How has this change of distance from the Olympic distance been?

It has not been a big change, especially in the first part of the season in which the main objective was the MD. I got a bit more kilometers on my bike than when I trained Olympic but not much more. The training hours are the same, between 14-17h per week.

What I have done has been to use practically every day, except for some soft start, the goat. What has allowed me to adapt very well to her and that right now is more comfortable in her than in the route.

In the past IM 70.3 of Lanzarote you were 2º of the general, were you expecting this result? How was the competition?

I went with the idea of getting experience, for nothing I expected the result I had, and less with the level there was. It was something similar to Challenge Salou, I went to enjoy a test with a very high international level, without any pressure, and I ended up doing the best two races of the year.

As for the competition I had good feelings from the first stroke. I managed to get out of the water first, something that made me very happy, since swimming this year was not coming out as well as I wanted.

By bike I got off the lead at km 6, since they were very strong, but I was able to hook up again at km 35 and stay with them until km 60 where they left again to get off with 1'30” in T2 .

In the race on foot I left quite conservative although the 4º was very far and I knew that the podium had it within reach, I did not want to force too much at the beginning and pay it. At the turning point I saw that Markus Rolli did not seem to be very thin and I decided to squeeze to try to catch it as soon as possible. I took it for lack of 5k and I attack him without thinking twice. Finally Markus was disqualified ... they could have told me before, with the heater that I hit to catch it. hehe

Emilio Aguayo competing in MD events

Even though you have been competing regularly in the middle distance for a short time, the result of Lanzarote has given you good points in the KPR703 Ranking. Do you intend to compete in more tests of this circuit and try to run the World Championship next year?

Yes, after the result of Lanzarote, the main objective for next year is to get the PRO license of the IRONMAN franchise and try to qualify for the IRONMAN 70.3 2018 world championship in South Africa, Nelson Mandela Bay (1 days and 2 of September). As for the calendar, I still do not know what races I will run, Jaime has it more clear than me but until he finishes the season he does not want to tell me anything.

And in a few weeks, Long Distance debuts. When did you decide to take this step? What are your trainings for Ibiza varying?

Well, it has been something that I have been considering as the season went by. I wanted to score in the Spanish Triathlon Cup, for this I had to run three tests of the circuit and I could only run two of them Orihuela (3rd place) and Valencia (1st place), so I only had to run the LD to be able to score and try to keep the podium. The first place is already for Gustavo but in Ibiza we will play the 2nd and 3rd place Pablo Dapena and me.

For Ibiza if I'm doing more of long series of running, some 4h bike output and also some 1h30 'progressive race.

I am finding myself very comfortable doing this type of training and I like it a lot. I think I feel better in this kind of distance than in Olympic and sprint, although I do not want to leave it at all.
