Fernando Alarza, 11º at the European Games in Baku

The Spanish triathlete Fernando Alarza has reached the 11ª place in the men's competition of this first edition of the European Games held in the city of Baku of Azerbaijan.

The first swimming segment has been by one of the great international specialists of this discipline, Richard Varga, who after completing the 1,5 km of the stage has emerged in the lead, with Cesc Godoy occupying the fourth place just six seconds behind the Slovak. While the rest of Spaniards left the beach of Bilgah more than 47 seconds.

Godoy would be established in the head of six squad that completed two laps of the 40 km sector, would be reduced to four, with the Spaniard, Varga, the British Thomas Bishop and the Swiss Andrea Salvisberg. Next, Alarza and Castro have circulated in the strong pursuit block, working both in the front posts to reduce the disadvantage. The group has been cutting distances, to the point of merging with the front, with Bishop staying in the lead alone.

Midway through the fifth a platoon of nine with Graves, Salvisberg, Schomburg, Varga, Bishop, Latin, Haller, Breinlinger and Benson. The triathlete of Talavera de la Reina would be one of those who pulled the most from this squad, but the lack of cooperation diminished the aspirations of the group. To this has been added the good work of the front group, which has imposed a very high pace with which they have managed to increase the advantage.

Towards the end of the sector the Spanish David Castro along with the Norwegian Blummenfelt have launched an attack to try to hook with the head. However, the leaders would access the T2 with Vargas leading the start of the 10 km sector of running. Soon Benson, Schomburg and Salvisberg have taken the reins of the test. The Spaniards have left the T2 with a disadvantage higher than a minute and a half, and despite this they have offered an enormous deployment, struggling until the last moment.

The Spaniards have fought to the end, with Fernando Alarza constantly pulling the chasing pack in the cyclist to try to link with the front group.

The triathlete Talavera de la Reina has made a great wear, and despite leaving the T2 with a considerable disadvantage has not surrendered, struggling to climb positions to achieve a meritorious 11ª final place.

Cesc Godoy it has been classified in 17º place, after standing out in the first stages of the competition, coming out very well situated in the swimming segment and integrating the head of the pack during the first half of the cycling route.
