Gurutze Frades will race in the Challenge Mogán Gran Canaria in his #roadtokona

The triathlete is the first Spanish to qualify for the Ironman World Championship with the new scale and the third in history

The spectacular triathlete Gurutze Frades will compete in Challenge Mogán Gran Canaria before facing the Ironman World Championship  of Hawaii, the most prestigious test of this demanding sport, which is held on October 8 in the mythical town of Kona.

In the last two years, Frades has become one of the great international triathletes by getting on the podium in four Ironman races, with victory in Vichi (France), second in Malaysia and third in Florianópolis (Brazil) where he achieved his historic classification to the queen test of the triathlon. She was also second in the Ironman 70.3 in Turkey. Likewise, in 2015 it reached the fourth position in the ITU World Long Distance Championship in Motala (Sweden).

The Euskadi athlete is the first Spanish professional to qualify for Kona since the implementation of the KPR points system, which reduces the presence of PROs. Frades follows in the footsteps of Maribel Blanco, our first professional to run in Hawaii 14 years ago, and Virginia Berasategui. In Florianóplis, he registered the best national long-distance record in women with 9 hours, 15 minutes and 52 seconds.

After dedicating herself to basketball since she was a child, Gurutze started in triathlon at the age of 27, surprisingly adapting to her new disciplines, obtaining four Spanish Long Distance Championships from 2011 to 2014, including a double in 2013 when she also won the Middle Distance Championships.

The date of the Mogán-Gran Canaria Challenge, on September 17, was chosen to favor the presence of the European elite of this sport on the Island to prepare for the Ironman World Championship, which takes place three weeks later in Hawaii . In the test based on the beach of Amadores, athletes of more than twenty nationalities will meet.

Frades joins the premiere of this test, among other professionals, such as Uxío Abuín, Massimo Cigana, Antonio Rossi, Jonathan Ciavattella  Pablo Dapena and Domen Dornik. This medium distance triathlon is part of the prestigious Challenge Family, a circuit with 44 races in 21 countries.
