The coolest 7 races on the planet

In some of these tests runs at temperatures of -40º C

The coldest races on the planet

At Red Bull they have searched the coldest parts of the world and here they present us with the 7 coldest races on the planet… your eyebrows are going to freeze!

Grab the thermal clothes and take a look at these cold races, and also if you dare with the world of 'running', take a look at the Wings For Life World Run, the competition that will take place at different points of the globe next month of May.

1 Run at the top of the world

: North Pole Marathon.

Location: The name says it all, the North Pole.
Temperature: Between -25º C and -40º C, but the wind can create the thermal sensation of -60º C.
When is celebrated? Registrations for the April edition of 2017 have already been opened.
Freeze leveln: 9.

There's a lot to think about running at the North Pole: the possibility of polar bear attacks, the biting wind chill, and the fact that there really isn't any land there. The organizer and first person to dare to run the North Pole Marathon, Richard Donovan, affirms: “The most difficult challenges for the participants are the state of the terrain and the extreme cold”.

“As an organizer, I also have to take into account the threat of a possible attack from a single polar bear, so there are armed rangers in place to deal with that mishap and scare off the bears. In addition to all this, it should be remembered that at the North Pole there is no land, but the participants run on the ice floes that float on the ocean, so I also have to prepare a route that prevents the broken ice from making the participants fall. runners to the water”.

2 Run at the bottom of the world

Antarctic Ice Marathon.

CareerAntarctic Ice Marathon.

Location: 80 degrees to the south, just a few hundred kilometers from the South Pole.
Temperature: -20º C and the possibility of strong katabatic winds.
When is celebrated? Registrations for the November edition of 2017 are now open.
Freezing level: 8.

In the South Pole you can run in different modalities: marathon or half marathon, and always in November. It is the only marathon race that runs through the interior of the Arctic, so for those interested in completing a marathon on each continent, the best they can do is grab a pair of snow glasses and book a ticket on the private plane that takes the participants from Chile to the Unión glacier, in Antarctica.

3 Ultramarathon in the Arctic

Career6633 Ultra.
Location: Eagle Plains, Yukon (Canada to the Arctic Ocean by Tuktoyatuk).
Temperature: Normally between -30º C and -40º C, although the lowest temperature was -52º C, with a thermal sensation of -78º C during the 2008 race.
When is celebrated? March of 2016.
Freezing level: 8.

It is one of the coldest, windiest and extreme ultramarathons on the planet. It is a race in which you do not stop at any time, self-sufficient and 200 or 550 km. of length that crosses the line of the Arctic Circle. But running is not everything, since participants have to push sledges with all their food, kitchen items and clothes.

The normal thing is that the temperatures go around -30º C or -40º C, but some parts can be colder. The organizers of the race say that the lowest temperature of the seven previous editions was -52º C in Inuvik, with a thermal sensation that dropped to -78º C in Wright Pass.

Location: Throughout Canada, although the coldest is in the Winnipeg area, Manitoba.
Temperature: Thermal sensation of -47º C.
When is celebrated? Manitoba arrives next 7 February 2016, although the race runs between January and March.
Freezing level: 8.

Last year the temperature reached -47º C, but still, 500 people decided to take the start in the half marathon on ice. It is celebrated in Winnipeg (Manitoba), a place famous for ... the cold! NASA has named a piece of Mars like this cold city after it reached the same temperature as the Red Planet.

This is the only 100k test of the South Pole, and it is a race made for the toughest endurance athletes. Christian Schiester (pictured) won the 2007 edition with a time of 19 hours, 58 minutes and 14 seconds. You have to sweat to get it, 100k can seem endless when you face the endless expansion of the Antarctic ... and the sun never sets!

When it comes to preparing for the race, everyone has their own methods, but the most interesting training session was training in refrigerator factories. We have a group of Swiss runners who use this preparation technique!”
