In cycling, Spaniards pedal an average of 51 km in 2h33 exits and run an average of 8,7km in 59 minutes

 
The social network Strava has recorded millions of activities of Spanish users and has produced a report with the main cycling and running statistics. Every second, Strava 9,6 activities are uploaded somewhere in the world. In 2015, 5,3 activities per second were recorded. In Spain more than 9,2 have been charged millions of activities in cycling and 4,5 millions in running

Strava, the social network for athletes, presents for the second year the annual Strava Insights report. Made up of millions of activities both in running and cycling, the study offers a unique perspective on sports habits and the behavior of Spanish riders and cyclists.
                                                                                 
Strava has analyzed the training and activities of thousands of users to prepare a report with significant statistics of sports habits both Spanish and global. The amount of data collected is immense: every second, 9,6 activities are uploaded to the social network somewhere in the world, which is a significant increase from last year, with 5,3 activities recorded per second in the Strava Insights 2015 report. Such amount of data makes it possible to document and analyze running and cycling trends in Spain and, at the same time, compare them with Strava data on a global scale.

The Strava community has generated billions of activities during 2016. Among them curious data, such as the number of years that would accumulate if we added the duration of all the activities recorded during the 2016: 60.400. Or the 8.570 loaded activities that contain the word "Pokemon".

The activity with the most kudos in the world was the Olympic gold of Greg Van Avermaet in Rio while in Spain it was the victory of Robert Gesink in the 14 stage of the Vuelta a España. Kudos are the distinctions that are given in Strava to honor the effort and show respect. In 2016, 89,5 millions of kudos were given around the world.

Global cycling

The Strava platform has registered in 2016 up to 161 millions of activities, adding a whopping 5,8 billions of kilometers with 55 billions of meters of unevenness being on Sunday 20 of September the most popular to go by bike around the world. In Spain, 9,2 charged millions of activities in cycling.

Also, Strava has cCompared to cycling data in different countries of Europe, and the Netherlands are the ones with the fittest cyclists. Spain sneaks into the top 5, although with similar numbers to those of its European compatriots.

Cycling in Spain: Barcelona is still the most active city and Mallorca is the most popular

The data collected in Strava have allowed to define the profile of cyclists in Spain. Men usually pedal an average of 53 kilometers in each exit, adding a drop of 735 meters in 2h38 activities. The women have very similar numbers, and they leave 2h29 average to pedal 49km with 666m of unevenness. The data is very similar to the data recorded last year.

Barcelona is the most active city in number of registered activities (1,4 million), followed by Madrid with 783.598. However, in the top5 of most popular segments we find only segments in the Balearic Islands. Probably due to the tourism cycle, very practiced in the islands, which makes the Port of Pollença the most popular place in Spain to ride a bike, with 132.555 records.

According to Strava's data, fastest cyclists are alava (23,9km / h on average), those with the most unevenness in Las Palmas, with an average of 991m of positive elevation gain, and those with the longest runs in the Balearic Islands with an average of 65.9km. The Castilian steppe meets the forecasts, and the cyclists in Valladolid have taken the title of the flattest terrain. For its part, Melilla, with its only 12,3 square kilometers, repeats with the award for "the shortest exit", with an average of 37km.

Global Running

The brokers all over the world have joined efforts this year in Strava to register up to 86,7 millions of activities, 4,5 millions of them in Spain. The most active day around the world was the 11 Sunday in September while in Spain it was a working day, the 20 day in September, a hot day in most of the Peninsula.

In Europe, the country that has the fastest runners It is the United Kingdom. Spain, however, sneaks into the positions of honor with a fast pace for men, while in women it is placed in the fourth position.

Spaniards run an average of 8,7km per departure

Tuesday, September 20, with high temperatures in most of the Peninsula, was the preferred day to go jogging in Spain. Or at least that is the data collected by Strava, being the most popular day of the year. In the 4,5 million activities uploaded in Spain, Strava records that athletes have traveled up to 41,1 million kilometers accumulating up to 505 million meters of positive elevation gain.

Men run one average of 9,8km by activity by 7,6km of women. The runs are usually similar: 58 min for men and 1h for women, with a speed of 5: 24 for them and 6: 29 for them.

In running, Barcelona continues to win the battle for Madrid as the most active city, and they register almost 300.000 more activities, with Valencia in the third step of the podium for the second consecutive year. The rest of the prizes are distributed throughout the Iberian Peninsula and Guipúzcoa stands as the fastest province (5: 17 of medium rhythm).

The podios for the unevenness go to the south of Spain, with Seville as the province with the flattest route (53m) and Ceuta with the one with the highest gradient (204m). For the first year, Teruel occupies a double podium of honor and becomes the province where the Strava athletes spend more time running, both in distance (10,5km) and in time (1h30).

"Commute" or commuting to work by bike or running: an upward trend

The "commute", or commuting to work on a bike or running are a reality in countries like the United Kingdom or the Netherlands, where the use of the bike is very common. Little by little, this trend is coming to Spain. In cycling, the most popular day was Tuesday 24 in March when 8.522 people went to work by bike. In running, the 23 Tuesday of August was the most popular, when they were loaded up to 3.110 offsets.

79.879 cyclists from all over the world went to work by bike the 10 day of May in the first Global Bike to Work Day and they loaded their activity in Strava. With just one day of not traveling by car, approximately 514 tons of carbon emissions were saved.

Simon Klima, Strava's local marketing director commented: “The Strava Insights report shows the growth of the Strava community in Spain year after year, whether they are elite athletes, popular runners or people who want to record their workouts. Each activity tells and gives us a story, and for us all are important. In addition, with Strava we can compare activities at a global level and understand the behavior and habits of cyclists and runners ”.
