Ocean Lava Madeira is an exclusive test on the Portuguese island of Maderia, awarded as the "Best insular destination in Europe and the world in 2017"

For the Tourist Board of Madeira, the Ocean Lava Triathlon It is a perfect test to mark the beginning of the celebrations of the 600th anniversary of the discovery of the island of Madeira, the homeland of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ocean Lava Madeira 2018 offers three distances, being the main race of medium distance (1.9km - 90.7km - 18.4km), plus a distance race Olympic (1,5 km - 37,9 km - 9,4 km) and a distance triathlon sprint (750 m - 20,3 km - 4,9 km).

The new venue of the event is located on the beach of Band d'Além, in the Bay of Machico (about 125 meters long by 70 wide), which is distinguished by its yellow sand imported from Morocco and located just 20 minutes from the capital, Funchal, and 10 minutes from the Cristiano Ronaldo Madeira International Airport. This beautiful and wide crescent-shaped bay is one of the few sandy beaches on the island.

Swimming Ocean Lava Madeira will be 1,9km (1.2 miles) in the Atlantic Ocean with 2 laps, then the athletes will face a cycling circuit of a total of 90,7km - 5 laps of 17,6 km with 315m of positive slope in each lap (total positive slope of 1575 m ). The 18,4km walking tour is of 4 laps crossing the city of Machico with an initial stretch of 500m where the athletes will run to the Plaza de Forum Madeira, from where the laps will start running with a fixed route between the Machico promenade and the roundabout near the Machico stadium. passing through the 'murinho', an iconographic zone of Machico. At the end of the fourth round, the athletes will run towards the finish line located in the Praça do Fórum.

Last year the winners of the Ocean Lava Madeira were the Galician triathlete Gustavo Rodríguez in the male category and the British Alice Hector in the female category.

Machico Bay invites triathletes to enjoy the incredible views over the sea and the land. To the east of the Machico valley is the Pico de Facho Belvedere where you can admire the panoramic views from the peaks of the central area of ​​the island to the Ponta de São Lourenço.
