What is quadrathlon or quadriathlon?

The quadriathlon is a sport of 4 disciplines, it has the three characteristics of triathlon (swimming, cycling and running) and also includes canoeing. We could also call it the sport of "the three transitions".

Although it may seem a new sport to be little known the quadriathlon has its origins almost 30 years ago, in 1987 the first was played in Ibiza and the distances were 5km of swimming, 20km of kayak, 100km of cycling and 21km of running, a very hard race, three years later, in 1990 the World Quadrathlon Federation was founded (WQF ).

It was not until 11 years later at 2001 that the World Cup kicked off, which is currently a consolidated competition on the calendar. It consists of 10 tests that are disputed in 8 countries of northern and central Europe: Hungary, Great Britain, Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Sweden and Norway.

The main distances (*) in the tests of the Quadriathlon World Cup are:

Sprint: 750m swimming + 20km of cycling + 4km of kayak + 5k running race
Middle distance: 1,5km swimming + 40km cycling + 8km kayak + 10k walking race
Average Distance + = 1,9km swimming + 60km of cycling + 10km of kayak + 10k running race

The current Champion of the World Cup is Spanish Enrique Fishes, who took the title in 2015 and in this 2016. Enrique is also the 2015 World Champion and 2016 European Champion.

As we have mentioned at the beginning of the article, the Quadriathlon was born in Ibiza, where the European championship has been celebrated from 2001 to 2015.

In 2014 the FETRI organized the championship of Spain, last year the winners were Enrique Peces and Ana Ruz, and in this 2016 the test will be held in El Anillo, in the Gabriel y Galán reservoir in Extremadura next 15 in October.

(*) Depending on the organizer, the order of cycling and kayaking is sometimes exchanged, and some distances vary.
