The congress takes the first step to punish the abandonment of run over cyclists

The proposal calls for a draft reform of the Criminal Code within three months so that accidents resulting in death or serious injuries to cyclists who require medical or surgical treatment are criminally prosecuted.

Yesterday the proposal was approved yesterday in the Plenary Session of the Congress of Citizens' Law, where a compromise amendment signed by the proponent, PSOE, Unidos Podemos, ERC and Foro Asturias, has been incorporated, so that punish drivers who leave a cyclist in the crash site without attending to the victim.

The proposal calls for a project to be submitted within three months. reform of the Penal Code for accidents resulting in death or serious injury to cyclists who require medical or surgical treatment be judged criminally.

In addition, the initiative requests that this reform of the Penal Code include the creation of a specific figure of the crime of omission of the duty of relief in traffic accidents that penalizes drivers who leave the accident site without attending to the victims, regardless of the physical state in which they remain.

In parallel, the text includes measures of identification of concentration stretches of bicycle victims and segments of concentration of accidents caused by the consumption of alcohol and drugs in order to intensify controls by agents of the Civil Guard, as well as a special surveillance of the safety distance in overtaking cyclists.
