Triathlete Alex Sierra dies after being run over by a tourist

He was brutally run over by a passenger while he was completing an afternoon cycling training session with other teammates on the A-1232 road.

The Aragonese Triathlon Federation has sent a statement about the death of Alex Sierra that yesterday he was brutally run over by a tourist on the A-1232 road at the height of Pozán de Vero (Huesca).

This is the full statement:

"We are absolutely dismayed by the death of our colleague Alex Sierra from the Barbastro Triathlon Athletics Club who yesterday was brutally run over by a tourist while he was completing an evening cycling training with other teammates on the A-1232 road near Pozán de Vero ( Huesca).

The medical assistants provided help on the scene both to Alex and his partner David, who were the athletes who suffered the greatest impact.

David Bestué was transferred to the Barbastro Hospital, where he is recovering from various injuries.

Alex had to be evacuated by helicopter in critical condition to the Miguel Servet hospital in Zaragoza where he died a few hours later.

The driver of the vehicle, who apparently tested positive for alcohol and drugs, was unharmed, is in custody and has been brought to justice.

The pain is total in the region of Somontano and in Barbastro where our colleagues, multidisciplinary athletes, and regular in FATRI competitions, were well known and loved by their neighbors.

The Aragonese Triathlon Federation, the national triathlon and sport in general joins the pain of our colleagues from the Barbastro Triathlon Athletics Club, CC Barbastro, and that of their families.

At the same time, we once again demand and remind our society in general, all preventive, educational and punitive measures to achieve total respect for people who enjoy sports and life from a section of the shoulder of our roads.

DEP Alex.   "

From Triathlon News we send our deepest condolences to family and friends.
