Tuur Hancke dies: cycling loses a young Belgian talent aged 19

The cycling world is in mourning following the death of Tour Hancke, a promising young Belgian, last Monday, November 25, coinciding with his 19th birthday.

The news was confirmed by his team, The Lead Out Cycling Academy, who expressed on social media:

 "It is with great sadness that the team has learned of the sudden death of Tuur Hancke. Hancke had been riding with our junior team since 2022 and this was his final season in the category.

The riders and team staff will always have a great memory of Tuur. Always respectful, always smiling and very nice to everyone. We will not be together any longer to create new memories.".

Born in Lo-Reninge, West Flanders, on 25 November 2005, Hancke had recently decided to retire from cycling.

Recently, Tuur had made the difficult decision to retire from cycling for personal reasons, as explained by the team's sports director, Arne Houtekier, in statements to the Flemish newspaper The Latest News.

“Tuur retired at the end of the season for personal reasons. He realised that he would not be making it into the professional ranks in the coming years.

"The combination of her higher education and the intensity of training and competitions became too much for her," Houtekier said.

This situation is not unusual in youth cycling, where many promising riders are forced to drop out due to the demands of balancing sport and academic life.
