What does an off-road journalist have in common with her work and a young engineer, promise of the Mountain Bike?

A CHALLENGE, A PASSION AND A TEAM. They are, Yolanda Vázquez Mazariego and Paula Quiñones, Team COMPEX titans that will face hand to hand the challenge of their first Titan Desert by Garmin, becoming part of that small 5% participation of women in the toughest MTB race in the world.

During the nine years that the Titan Desert has been celebrated by Garmin, the participation of women has been scarce, but not less important. The data shows that Spanish women are the ones who most dare to face this challenge and that thirty years seems to be the age to take it to fruition.

One of the objectives of the Titan Desert by Garmin this year, on the occasion of its tenth anniversaryit's increase female participation, a goal that she shares with Yolanda Vázquez Mazariego, who among her personal projects is finding that more women play sports and enjoy. In 2004, she directed the project 'The Woman's Race', getting 90.000 women to run in 2015.

"Running is already in fashion among women, so we have to move forward and I think now is the time for women to discover popular cycling and be encouraged to see the world from a bicycle. "

Yolanda, responsible for the health and nutrition section of the magazine Sporting Life Both in its paper version and in its online version, it bets and promotes with each of its projects not only the participation of women in sport, but also their foray into it, discovering the benefits it can bring to their daily lives. Weight loss club, women's self-defense classes and her blog Woman and Nutrition where she talks about everything that goes through the head of a female athlete, are some of the initiatives that she has promoted with great success.

'Women do more sport than it seems, but we do not participate in competitions'

For Paula Quiñones, the important thing when facing a challenge is the mental capacity and sacrifice of each person, regardless of their sex or physical capacity. Regarding the increase in female participation, she says that 'If we want to promote it, I think we should start by taking care of the current runners and making them more visible, at least as men. Currently there is a movement for equality, which was forged by a group of females in the last season of cyclocross and which aims to achieve a more equal cycling. Some of the demands are: exit grilles and decent hours, sub-23 category recognized and regulated, minimum duration of the races without underestimating the capacity of the females ...'
