The UCI will fine with more than 800 euros for throwing drums to the road

"With more severe fines we want to improve our image towards a more responsible and ecological"

According to the website solobici.es, the UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale) wants to end once and for all with the bad image that many professional cyclists transmit when throwing drums, wrappings or other garbage to the ground during the competition.

This was explained by Philippe Marien, commissioner of the UCI Jury, for the Belgian newspaper 'Het Nieuwsblad', just before the 'Omloop Het Nieuwsblad' and 'Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne' races took place last weekend: "we have to stop the feet of those cyclists who leave trash everywhere".

He has continued saying that "drop water drums into the canal or throw garbage on the road is not acceptable todaya ", and the idea is that"with more severe fines we want improve our image towards a more responsible and ecological".

But he has also taken into account that many cyclists like to give their cans to the public, "you can calmly approach the fans"But they want to avoid the runners"throw a half full or empty drum to the public with the adrenaline of the moment, assuming a danger. We do not want to see that again".

Therefore, the sanctions set for these upcoming races will be  200 to 500 Swiss francs (between 175 euros and 440 euros), although they may increase up to the Franks 1.000 Swiss (880 euros) if the drum is thrown in a dangerous manner.
