IRONMAN, a Wanda Sports Holding company, is proud to announce the IRONMAN All World Athlete ™ (AWA) General Champions for each category of age groups, following a brilliant calendar of events at 2017.

The IRONMAN® triathletes received the designation of IRONMAN All World Athlete in their age groups, after having competed in multiple events and winning classification points by age group during the 2017 season. The riders were rewarded for their three best performances throughout the year with the combined points, which determine the champion of each division.

The 29 winners of IRONMAN All World Athlete in total represented ten different countries. Firstly, 9 champions came from the United States (six women, three men). Australia was the second country with the most wins, with four triathletes (three women, one man). Other countries represented were: Germany with two women and one man, Brazil and Canada with a male champion, Italy with a male and a female winner, and Denmark, Finland, Switzerland and the United Kingdom, each with a female winner and Argentina, Japan and Poland with a male athlete each at the top of the podium.

More than 25,500 athletes around the world (767 more than in 2016) accumulated enough points in 2017 to obtain the designation of IRONMAN All World Athlete. The United States led the country ranking with 8,484 athletes, followed by Germany (1,549), United Kingdom (1,526), Canada (1,338), Australia (1,326) and Brazil (822). To obtain IRONMAN All World Athlete status, competitors must finish the season within the Top 10% of their age group with their top three races combined. Athletes who obtained the IRONMAN All World Athlete status are classified into three levels: Bronze (Top 10%), Silver (Top 5%) and Gold (Top 1%).

For the second year, IRONMAN has also awarded the designation of All Country Athlete ™, which classifies the annual performances of the athletes within the countries represented. Athletes who finish the season in the Top 10% of their country are recognized as an IRONMAN All Country Athlete. This allows competitors to see where they are compared to their compatriots.
