How has the classification of the Spanish PROS for the Ironman World Cup been?

The Spanish representation in this 2016 will be borne by 2 Gallegos (Saleta Castro and Iván Raña) and two Basques (Eneko Llanos and Guru Frades)

In the second article of the "Special Kona 2016 Triathlon News" We are going to tell how the road to "Mecca" has been for the four classified Spanish professional triathletes. The Spanish representation in 2016 will be run by 2 Galicians (Saleta Castro and Iván Raña) and two Basques (Eneko Llanos and Guru Frades)

Saleta Castro

Saleta Castro

The Galician was the last to qualify and who had the longest path. It began in September of 2015 with an 3ª place in the IM 70.3 of Lanzarote. He subsequently added valuable points in the IM of Malaysia with an 5 position.

In the spring the plans changed a bit, he did not get a seat for the IM of South Africa, so he had to go to compete with the IM of Texas ... and 6 days later he ran the Lanzarote. In both tests he could not finish ... but when it seemed that the classification for Kona was almost impossible, he made a carrerón in Frankfurt, and with a mark of 9h22min he finished in 6ª position.

Three weeks later he finished his qualification for Hawaii with one of the best results of his life, being 2ª in the Ironman of Maastrich in the Netherlands. Despite these results and having almost guaranteed the place for Hawaii, Saleta still took strength to run the IM 70.3 of Dublin where he achieved the 4ª place and his last points to certify his classification.

Ivan Raña

Ivan Raña

The ITU world champion in 2002 has had a year with very few competitions for what is usual in him. Thanks to his 12ª position in Kona 2015 he added a good handful of KPR points, later he ran the IM 70.3 of Palmas in Brazil and the IM of Lanzarote, totaling 3745 points that have been enough to achieve his ticket to Hawaii. Later he also played the IM 70.3 in Budapest.

Gurutze Frades

Gurutze Frades

The way of Gurutze Frades It was totally different, she had to start from scratch, since she has not run in Kona yet. It all started at IM Vichy where Guru achieved a historic victory, being the first Spanish to win an Ironman outside of Spain. Only 2 women had previously won an Ironman, Maribel Blanco and Virginia Berasategui (**) both 2 times each in Lanzarote. Later Guru tracked the classification with the 2º placed in the IM 70.3 of Turkey and the IM of Malaysia. Despite having these great results, Guru still did not have the guaranteed classification.

At the beginning of May Guru disputed the IM 70.3 of Mallorca where 8 was adding a few points, but his definitive pass was achieved at the IM Brasil, where 3ª finished with a great career and the second "best brand" of a Spanish woman in IM with a time of 9h25min52s. With all the points added Guru has been the 7ª of the KPR world ranking.

Eneko Llanos

Eneko Llanos

Eneko based her pass to Hawaii'16 thanks to the great result in the 2015 meeting where she achieved a fantastic 7ª place. Previously he had won the IM 70.3 from Lanzarote adding his first KPR points.

In March, he was 5º at IM 70.3 in California and in May he certified his pass to Kona'16 thanks to IM Texas, where he only had a ticket insured after finishing it. Texas did not leave a good taste in Eneko's mouth where "only" could be 13º.

Finally in July Eneko ran the IM in Frankfurt where he achieved a fantastic 3 position. Eneko qualifies her 11º IM from Hawaii through the big door, being 6º of the KPR world ranking.

(**) When quoting Virginia Berasategui, we must remember that she is a triathlete who has tested positive for EPO in 2013 in the Bilbao Triathlon. Previously at 2005 he also tested positive on the Lanzarote IM but his case was dismissed
