IRONMAN, a company of Wanda Sports Holdings, today announced that the city of Thun, in the Canton of Bern, will be the new host city of the IRONMAN® Switzerland in 2020. This change will be made after the celebration of the 23th edition of the race in Zurich, the largest city in the country.

"We are incredibly grateful for the 23 years of IRONMAN events in Zurich and we would like to thank all of our viewers, friends, volunteers and sponsors. Our team is looking forward to bringing the IRONMAN to Thun and we are working hard to make the transition perfect"Said Nico Aeschimann, Regional Operations Manager at IRONMAN. "However, the change will not be a goodbye. We are planning to create a multi-sport festival in Zurich from 2020".

IRONMAN Switzerland is the second event IRONMAN longest in the region after Club La Santa IRONMAN Lanzarote and oldest on the European continent. Thun, a city of 45,000 inhabitants and located approximately 130 kilometers to the southwest of Zurich, has expressed interest in organizing an IRONMAN event for several years.

Surrounded by an impressive Alpine landscape with the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau mountains and located in the same lake Thun and the Aare, the city of Thun offers numerous leisure and entertainment opportunities. The restaurants and public squares next to the water give the city a very special Mediterranean atmosphere.

From the renewed lido, the athletes will swim 3.8 km (2.4 miles) in the crystal clear waters of Lake Thun where the magnificence of the Alps is reflected. The swim will go counter-clockwise and will lead the athletes back to the marina next to the lido, where the athletes will leave the lake and go to the transition.

The 180 km (112 miles) cycling circuit will take the athletes to Spiez, where they will deviate from the lake to the beautiful Gürbe Valley. The triathletes will pedal to the Berne airport on the right side of the valley and return on the opposite side, where they will loop in the impressive Gantrisch area. From there, they will have a smooth turn ahead and slightly downhill towards the transition zone. There they will start the second loop that will complete the tour on top of the bicycle.

After the second transition, the athletes will begin their 42.2 km (26.2 miles) running tour along the lake shore to the old city, passing through the Schadau Castle and crossing the Aare River. On the other shore, the field moves away from the city by the trails of Thun City Run. Afterwards, the athletes will return to the city finding their streets full of spectators and will go to the point where their second round will begin.
