IRONMAN is committed to organize careers safely, and thus reduce the risk for athletes, volunteers and host communities.

Measures:

As a result, the operating principles for re-competing safely are organized around five broad areas of risk mitigation:

Improved hygiene:

Hand sanitizers, hand washing stations and disinfectant wipes will be available at all events. It will also improve cleaning of common areas.

Staff and volunteers will receive gloves and masks to wear while performing their duties in all areas.

Athletes will receive masks when picking up the pack welcome and will have to be used around the areas enabled for the event.

Detection and training:

Adequate health, hygiene and safety training will be provided for staff and volunteers in necessary functional areas.

The IRONMAN Smart Program will also provide safety guidelines for volunteers. Athletes and volunteers should complete a pre-race health questionnaire. Also, in many places body temperature will be taken no contact.

According to the guidelines of the World Health Organization, people with a body temperature of more than 38º will not be able to compete, volunteer or work.

Density reduction:

We will carry out measures to increase the space between athletes and support staff in busy areas of the event, such as swim start areas, transitions, and goals.

La modification or elimination of non-essential racing services such as banquets or welcome ceremonies can also occur.

Athlete self-sufficiency:

Thanks to the guidance of the Athlete Smart ™ program, athletes will be able to determine their individual level of self-sufficiency and also to minimize interaction with race officials and volunteers.

Athletes will be advised to take their nutrition products with them and to use for example hydration vests.

Athletes will be able to review self-sufficiency tips here www.ironman.com/return-tips.

“We have created a plan to bring the races back and we believe these guidelines will keep our athletes, volunteers, staff and communities safe.”

“We have been working with experts to understand how to host safe endurance events in a post-COVID-19 environment, jump-start the economy and bring back the mental and physical benefits to athletes,” said Andrew Messick, President and CEO of The IRONMAN Group.

These measures could eliminate up to 90% of contact points

Implementation of these best practices at IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 events, including self-reliance recommendations, could  eliminate up to 90% of all touchpoints and interactions for athletes.

“These guidelines are designed to bring competitions back in a safe and healthy way”

All measures will always be consulted with the IRONMAN Global Medical Advisory Council, local authorities and all those who are part of the ecosystem of our events”, added Messick.

The Return to Racing Athlete Pledge program

IRONMAN has also developed a program for athletes called Return to Racing Athlete Pledge which emphasizes the new responsibility of athletes to cooperate all together in order to compete, providing enough space and time to ensure the safety of all.
