History Ironman Hawaii

The first edition of Ironman Hawaii It was started in 1978 as a way to challenge athletes who had seen success in endurance sports events such as swimming, cycling, and running. US Navy couple Judy and John Collins, based in Honolulu, proposed combining the three toughest endurance races in Hawaii, the Waikiki Roughwater Swim, the 112-kilometer Bike Race Around-O'ahu and the Honolulu Marathon of 42 km in a single competition

The 18 February 1978, 15 people came to Waikiki to take on the IRONMAN challenge. Before competing, each one received three sheets of paper with some rules and a description of the circuit

In 1981, the race moved from the quiet shores of Waikiki to the Kona lava fields on the Big Island of Hawai'i. Along the Kona coast, black lava rock dominates the landscape, and athletes battle “ho'omumuku” 72 mph crosswinds, 35 degree temperatures, and a scorching sun.

On October 14, more than 2.000 athletes will embark on a trip of 225 kilometers to earn the title of IRONMAN.
