Record of Spanish triathletes in the Kona Ironman World Championship

It is the first time in history there will be two Spanish professional triathletes in the World Cup in Hawaii.

 

The third chapter of "Special Kona 2016 of Triatlonnoticias" We are going to dedicate it to the Spanish women who will compete in the ironman world championship. This is assuming a historical year for the women's triathlon both in sprint and Olympic events, as well as medium and long distance races.

In the world past of IM 70.3 in Mooloolaba there were six finishers, which was a record, since there had never been so many Spaniards in a 70.3 World Championship. For its part for Kona are 7 which have managed to qualify, the two professionals Saleta Castro y Guruzte Frades in addition to five age groups: Sara Sánchez, Patricia Bueno, Lucia Pérez, Esther Leal y Carmen Brahim.

In this PRO category, women account for 50% of the Spanish participation, since in men they will be Eneko Llanos and Iván Raña.

The Basque is one of the best Spanish triathletes in history, has been 4 times champion of Spain long distance and the first Spanish to win in an Ironman test outside of Spain.

SALT CASTRO (PRO)

The five best results of Saleta to obtain the necessary points and achieve the classification for Hawaii have been the 2ª place of the IM Maastrich, 5ª position in the IM Malaysia, 6ª in the IM Frankfurt besides the 3ª position in the IM 70.3 of Lanzarote and the 4ª in the 70.3 of Dublin.

The Galician triathlete will be the youngest Spanish PRO (both men and women) to debut at the Ironman World Championship. Also it is necessary to emphasize that she is the first Spanish in obtaining to make podium as much in the Ironman as in the 70.3 of Lanzarote

 

PATRICIA BUENO PEREZ (25-29)

Patricia is from Malaga and this will be her 2ª participation in the IM of Kona. She managed her slot in the IM Vichy 2015, where she was the first in her age group with a 10 time: 58: 49 that also earned her the 9ª of the general.

 

ESTER LEAL COUPLE (35-39)

Esther resides in Tres Cantos in the province of Madrid and this will be her 1ª participation in the IM of Kona. He got his pass in the IM of Wales 2015 where with a time of 11: 29: 25 was the best in his age group and also the best of all the age groups ... and 8ª of the general. With her slot to Kona she was the first Spanish to qualify for the IM70.3 World Championship (she ran it a few years ago) and for the Ironman World Championship

SARA SANCHEZ JIMENEZ (18-24)

Sara got her classification in the IM of Barcelona 2015 where she won in her age group with a 13 time: 15: 39. It is the only one with which we have not been able to contact, so we do not have more data or a photo of it. CARMEN GIL BRAHIM (40-44)

Carmen is Catalan, from Sabadell but has been living for many years in Atlanta (United States). This will be his 2ª participation in Hawaii since he also ran in 2014. Carmen got her classification in the IM of Panama City (Florida) being the first in her age group with a time of 10: 16: 56. It was a test where there was no PRO category and Carmen took the pleasure of being 3ª of the general of all women.

 

LUCIA PEREZ LOPEZ (30-34)

Lucia is from the Canary Islands and resides in Madrid. It was at the Ironman in Texas where he achieved his classification for the Kona World Championship with a time of 9: 02: 08 that earned him to be 3 in his age group and 19 in the general. This will be his first participation in the World Cup in Hawaii.

 

NOTE: We must also highlight two other Spaniards who won their place for Kona, but who gave up the slot and will not be in the Ironman World Championship. The first is the Catalan Merce Magem, who was proclaimed European champion of Ironman in Frankfurt by winning her age group 55-59 and the other is the Andalusian Yesica Perez who obtained the second place in 18-24 in the past Ironman of Maastrich in the Netherlands.
