Spanish triathletes at record pace in Kona

In this 2017 will be the year with more Spanish participants in the Kona World Championship in Hawaii with 7 classified triathletes, Guru Frades in the PRO category and six in age groups.

At the end of last year we published an article about "Imprabale growth of the female triathlon in Spain" and this year that growth is being seen in the Ironman and Ironman 70.3 circuit tests.

Judith Corachán made history by being the first Spanish PRO to qualify for an Ironman 70.3 World Championship and for the Kona World Championship Guru Frades has managed to qualify for the second consecutive time. In 2015 there were 4 Spanish triathletes (all GGEE), in 2016 there were 6 Spanish triathletes in Hawaii (2 of them PROS, Gurutze Frades y Saleta Castro) and in this 2017 there will be 7 who will compete in "The Mecca of triathlon", Gurutze Frades again and six triathletes in age groups. The seven classified are:

GURUTZE FRADES (PRO)

Guru was 5ª in the IM of South Africa and 4ª in the one of Brazil, his two great results of 2017 in two continental championships, KPR4000. He also scored points in the 70.3 of Aix en Provence and in Kona 2016.

ALBA REGUILLO (GE 35-39)

The triathlete from La Mancha was the first to qualify, achieving her pass to Kona in the IM of Vichy in France in August of last year to be 2 in her age group with a time of 10: 11: 46

MARI CRUZ PALMA (GE 35-39)

Mari cruz palma

The Andalusian triathlete achieved her classification in the IM of Los Cabos in Mexico, being the first of her age group with a time of 11: 27: 21  

CRISTINA RAMIREZ (GE 35-39)

The Catalan achieved her pass to Kona a few days ago at the Hamburg IM, where she was first in her age group with a 10 time: 13: 17

LUCIANA BERMUDEZ (GE 40-44)

Luciana qualified for Hawaii in Malaysia IM where she was first in her age group with a 11 time: 11: 06

VERONICA AVENE-AVENI (GE 40-44)

Veronica Avene

Veronica qualified for Hawaii in the IM of Mallorca, was second in her age group with a time of 10: 00: 04.

MIREIA ARILLAGA (GE 25-29)

Mireia Arillaga

The Basque triathlete, the youngest of the Spanish classified, was the last to qualify for Hawaii, last Sunday at the IM in Copenhagen where she was first in her age group with a time of 9: 56: 36.

 NOTE: In this article we must also mention Esther Leal who was first in 35-39 in the IM of Copenhagen, dropping out of the 10 hours but renouncing his place in Hawaii.
