Avilés host of the 2021 Duathlon World Championship

Date: Will host November 6 and 7

Avilés will once again be the center of world attention for sport next November with the celebration on the 6th and 7th of Duathlon World Championship 2021.

La maximum international appointment for duathletes from the five continentss returns to the city after a successful and remembered edition in 2016, and will once again bring together hundreds of international athletes.

The event has been announced this Saturday by the mayor of Avilés, Mariví Monteserín, and the director of Competitions of the Spanish Triathlon Federation, Jorge García.

The presentation was also attended by the general director of Sports, Beatriz Álvarez and -through previously recorded messages- Marisol Casado, president of the International Triathlon Federation (World Triathlon); José Hidalgo, president of the Spanish Triathlon Federation; and Emilio Martín, athlete three times world Duathlon champion.

The lack of relevant international competitions in the last year and the cancellation also in 2021 of the highest international event represented a serious threat to the sports and personal planning of the specialists of the discipline, who will finally be able to enjoy the competitions with medals and titles at stake in the month of November in Avilés.

Without the previous work and the effective coordination that the organizational trajectory of Avilés and FETRI guarantees in recent years, it would not have been possible to offer a quick solution with guarantees of success such as the one presented to athletes from all over the world.

Avilés once again presents emblematic places to offer competitions that range from the incomparable setting of the square and the surroundings of the Niemeyer Cultural Center, to the running and cycling segments through natural areas such as the Zeluá coven, which reaches the cycle path, passing through the recovered promenade of the Avilés estuary, in the race on foot.

The circuits, already known by national and international duathletes, will be one of the main attractions for participation in the championship along with the heat of the Avilesino public, and the tourist excellence of the city already known for the world duathlon.

El Duathlon World Cup will be held in Spain for the sixth time, and Avilés will be the second venue to receive it twice, a privilege that the Galician city of Pontevedra held until last 2019.

In 2014 it was held in Pontevedra, which it would repeat as headquarters in 2019, and in Avilés in 2016, waiting for the next and exciting edition of 2021.

After the celebration of the Duathlon World Championship in 2016, in which the Mixed Relay test was implemented with a view to its debut at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, the event has had as venues Pontevedra, in 2019; Odense (Denmark) in 2018; and Penticton (Canada) in 2017.

Emilio Martín, the best Spanish duathlete and international top of the last decade, got the silver medal in Avilés 2016, Penticton 2017 and Pontevedra 2019, and will fight to be on the podium again in Avilés 2021.

Mavi García, who achieved bronze for Spain in Avilés 2016, climbed to the podium in second position at Penticton 2017, without Spain getting a medal in the elite female representation in subsequent years.
