Curiosities of the IRONMAN World Cup in Nice 2023

The 2023 VinFast IRONMAN World Championship hosted a spectacular, all-male competition in Nice.

2 double winners in the IRONMAN World Championship and iRONMAN 70.3 in 2023 

Tim bradley, 62, of Merrick, NY, and donald brooks, 46, from Devon, UK, made the most of the World Championship season by winning their respective age categories at both the VinFast IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Lahti, Finland, and the VinFast IRONMAN World Championship in Nice.

The fastest in each segment 

In the male professional field, Matthew Marquardt (USA), in his first IRONMAN World Championship as a professional, started the day with the fastest swim segment in a time of 47:46.  

Sam LaidlowIn addition to the victory, he recorded the fastest cycling segment of the day with a time of 4:31:28.  

Patrick Lange produced the fastest race segment of the day, setting an IRONMAN World Championship record with a time of 2:32:41. 

The youngest and oldest triathlete to finish 

Nicholas Catullo (USA) was the youngest competitor at 18 years old, while Bob Knucky (CAN) at 75 years old was the oldest competitor to complete the event. 

Jan Frodeno's farewell 

Jan Frodeno Arguably one of the greatest triathletes of all time, he completed his last IRONMAN World Championship as a professional triathlete at the age of 42, placing 24th. 

Nice the first World Cup venue outside the USA 

Nice, France, is honored to be the first location outside of the United States to host the IRONMAN World Championship, connecting to the city's rich triathlon history that began in 1982 with the Triathlon International de Nice.  

It is interesting to note that since the race began in 1978, it has had only four locations.  

It started on the island of Oahu in Hawaii, then moved to Kailua-Kona on the same island of Hawaii and also had a stop in St. George, Utah.
