Eneko Llanos tells us why compete in Challenge Vitoria

After the success of the town of Vitoria-Gasteiz last year, when it hosted the World Long Distance Triathlon Championship, counting on two of the biggest stars of the international scene Chris MacCormack and the local triathlete, Eneko Llanos, this year Vitoria will host the first edition of CHALLENGE VITORIA, test belonging to one of the reference circuits of international long distance.

Because of this, we wanted to interview Eneko Llanos, who, in addition to Elite Triathlete, has been the designer of these circuits, to tell us a little more about how they are and about some tips to the participating triathletes.

Q: What makes Challenge Vitoria so special?

The race itself, its spectacular natural landscapes through which runs the race that in turn have passed through a great city such as Vitoria, with a totally passionate audience and delivered to the triathlon.

Q: What are your best tips for this race?

The swimming: The lake is calm in the mornings and with clean waters at a good temperature although it is advisable to compete with neoprene. The space is open and you can enjoy it without feeling pressure.

Bike: The race is fast despite finding some small hills but the rest is virtually uneven with spectacular landscapes where it is likely to find some windy areas, especially at the end of the circuit.

Race on foot: Practically flat and very fast and you can enjoy the city and its beautiful walks.

Q: What do you think are the places to visit in the city of Vitoria?

The city center and the Cathedral of Santa María are the places not to be missed. There are a lot of surprising “corners” in the historic center of this city, full of bars and restaurants where you can enjoy a good “pintxo” and a good Rioja Aalavesa wine.

Other representative places are the "Florida Park" and the "Prado Park" where, if you are going to train, you will find many athletes, including a Marathon World Champion, Martín Fiz.

One of the places that I like most is the "Green Ring", which is the green belt that surrounds the entire city and passes through impressive parks such as Salburua, Armentia, Olarizu, ... If you wish you can rent a bicycle to discover the "Green Ring".

Q: Why do triathletes want to compete in Vitoria?

Vitoria is a city that makes you feel "at home", all citizens take to the streets to show their support with this triathlon, a great race that combines nature and a spectacular medieval city.

Vitoria is the European Green Capital, with a greater number of green spaces in relation to the number of inhabitants, in addition to the spectacular landscapes that surround the city makes this great event unique.

The circuit has been designed by the local triathlete Eneko Llanos, an appointment that will feature 3,8 km to swim in the Ullibarri-Gamboa Lake located in the beautiful Provincial Park of Landa. The bicycle segment will have two bicycle laps to complete 180 km through the plains Alavesas visiting several Basque historical towns next to the mountain range of Elguea. The race will end with the segment on foot, which runs through the heart of this multicultural city, a medieval city that will have the goal located in the spectacular Plaza de España.
