Fenella Langridge to undergo surgery after severe arterial injury

The British triathlete Fenella Langridge, currently number 43 in the rankings of the Professional Triathletes Organization (PTO) has received some tough news that puts its 2025 season at risk.
After a difficult year, marked by fatigue and results below expectations, the athlete has confirmed that she suffers from a medical condition called Endofibrosis of the external iliac artery (EIAE), which requires immediate surgery.

What is iliac artery endofibrosis?
This condition, little known outside of professional cycling, affects blood circulation due to hardening of the external iliac artery. Langridge explained it simply on his YouTube channel:
"My artery should be round, but it's hardened and narrowed. This prevents blood from flowing properly to my left leg, causing pain, cramps, and excessive lactate buildup."
Problems from the previous season
Over the past 12 months, the British athlete has experienced a noticeable decline in performance, particularly in the cycling and running segments. Initially, she attributed her problems to accumulated fatigue.
However, during his recent training camp in Lanzarote, his symptoms worsened. "I couldn't run uphill without my leg buckling," Langridge said. After an unsuccessful attempt to resolve the problem with physical therapy, he decided to seek medical advice.
DNF at IRONMAN New Zealand: A clear warning
Physical problems reached a critical point in the HOMBRE DE HIERRO New Zealand just two weeks ago, where Fenella had to retire (DNF).
Faced with this situation, he decided to go to a specialist, who finally confirmed the diagnosis of Endofibrosis of the External Iliac Artery.
Langridge commented:
"The news wasn't what we expected to hear. It was a tough blow, but at least now I know what I have. At least now we know what's going on and we can find a solution."
Next step: surgery
The British athlete has decided to undergo surgery in the coming weeks, under the supervision of renowned British specialist Professor Robert Hinchliffe.
Although the surgery means a significant break from his training and competitions, Langridge remains optimistic about the possibility of returning to top-level competition in the near future:
"At least now we know what the problem is and there's a solution. It takes away my uncertainty and gives me back the hope of continuing to be a professional."
A crucial recovery for his career
For Fenella, overcoming this medical issue isn't just a physical issue, but also an emotional and mental one. The British player acknowledged that the situation had sapped her positive energy, normally one of her most valued traits by fans and rivals.
Despite the setback, Langridge faces the future with determination, committed to making a full recovery and resuming her career as one of the leading figures in IRONMAN.
From Triathlon News We will closely monitor Fenella's recovery and hope to see her back in competition soon.
