ITU approves measures against Covid-19 in competitions

These measures are indicative since it depends on the particular situation of each competition

The ITU Executive Board has approved the preventive measures to fight COVID-19 in a document sent to the organizers of the events.

These guidelines are designed to help organizers efficiently and effectively deal with the “new normal” of COVID-19.

The recommendations have been prepared by the sports department together with the technical, medical, athletes and coaches committee, as well as the WHO recommendations for social gatherings.

In Spain ADESP has presented a plan for outdoor competitions

For Individual Sports outdoors or in Pavilions / Stadiums, the Spanish Sports Association proposes:

  •  El number of participants will be limited so that there is a social security distance between them; at least in the start, finish and other concentrations of the event.
  •  They may carry out batches of departures according to the number of registered in order to safeguard these safety distances.
  • In areas susceptible to crowds (departure and finish areas), restricted access to safeguard social distance of security.

Effective protection of the health and safety of athletes must remain a priority.

During the evolution of the COVID-19 outbreak, the IOC and the World Health Organization have reported that effective protection of the health and safety of athletes should remain a priority.

What matters the health of athletes

Event organizers must ensure that all athletes are covered by adequate measures to protect their health and that they have access to immediate medical attention while participating in the competition.

The organizers will have to take preventive measures to stop transmission infection and reduce the risk of infection.

Access to medical facilities

To do this they must ensure that any athlete or participant who needs immediate medical attention, has access to medical facilities.

Control of body temperature, use of masks and gloves

Among others, the recommendations include the observation, in the events, of the health of the participants taking the body temperature.

  • The use of masks and gloves in all non-competition activities.
  • Each organizing committee must prepare a plan with the local authorities that covers 3 stages: risk assessment, surveillance and response.
  • The design of the competition must rabide by the rules of social distancing and hygiene.
  • All the social activities that are carried out in the competitionss will have to be canceled.
  • The Guidelines will also have an impact on the cmedal ceremonies and sessionsIt is informative of the race.

Control in each area of ​​the competition

In the future, each aspect of the competitions will be reviewed taking into account the social distance in:

  • The departure area,
  • Swimming segment
  • Swimming exit
  • Cyclist segment
  • Career segment
  • Meta
  • Penalty Box
  • Help stations, etc.

If there are symptoms, stay home

Anyone, including athletes, coaches, technical officials, media or spectators, who is unwell (i.e. fever, cough) will have to stay home and stay away from the event.

Save travel history for symptoms

For symptoms of acute respiratory illness before, during, or after the trip, athletes are encouraged to seek medical attention and to share the travel history with their doctor.

Although these tips have been developed using the best information available, they are only intended to be used as guidance, since their application will depend on the current restrictions of the local authorities in force where the event takes place.
