Jonny Brownlee: Big goals for 2025 in his new stage

The 2025 season looks exciting for Jonny Brownlee, one of the most outstanding British triathletes of the last decade.

After a year 2024 in which injuries and ups and downs prevented his participation in the Paris Olympic Games, the Olympic medalist of bronze (London 2012), silver (Rio 2016) and gold in the mixed relay (Tokyo 2020) faces a new cycle full of challenges.

With renewed motivation, he has decided to alternate medium-distance events with the supertri format, without closing the door to long distance in the future.

In this article, we tell you about Jonny Brownlee's plans for the coming months, his desire to get back to having fun in competitions and why fans of this sport should keep him on their radar.

Motivation after a difficult year

2024 was not an easy year for Brownlee. After failing to qualify for the Paris Olympics, the Briton struggled with a number of physical issues that kept him out of many key events.

However, at the end of the season, he was feeling better and better, to the point of achieve a sixth place in the supertri final in Neom, demonstrating that its competitive quality is still very present.

In a recent live on his YouTube channel, 'Brownlee Fitness', Jonny commented that he is looking for enjoy again of the triathlon:

“Without sounding too cliché, I want to enjoy myself for a couple of years, because I think I've been taking it too seriously and I've lost a bit of the joy.”

For this reason, the main challenge It's not just about getting on the podium, but also recover the passion which led him to success in the past.

Return to the middle distance

Although he has been recognized primarily for his achievements in the short distance (particularly in the ITU World Series and the Olympic Games), Brownlee had already flirted with the middle distance in events such as Challenge Daytona (2020), HOMBRE DE HIERRO 70.3 Portugal (2021) and Challenge Mogán Gran Canaria (2022).

In his own words, The first part of 2025 will be focused on this type of competitions.

One of the events that most attracts attention to start the season is, precisely, Challenge Mogán Gran CanariaThere she experienced some tough moments (such as forgetting to hydrate and “experiencing” the race), but she says she wants to return “because I enjoyed running there,” and she plans to make it her first official event.

That balance between competitiveness and enjoyment seems to be the cornerstone of Jonny’s new approach.I want to do well in all the tests, but I don't want to forget to have fun.", he said during his intervention on social networks.

Supertri and the search for speed

Despite his inclination towards middle distance in 2025, the Briton will not sit back when it comes to fast competitions. In fact, he has announced that could open the season with a supertri test in indoor format, to maintain that spark of explosiveness and speed that characterizes short distances.

Let's remember that Jonny is also a fundamental part of the Brownlee Racing within the supertri circuit, combining the role of athlete and team manager.

This dual role gives him a more global vision of the sport and also allows him to: contribute to growth of a format that is gaining more and more followers due to its dynamic and televised nature.

IRONMAN in sight?

One of the juiciest headlines Brownlee has offered in his remarks is his intention to take on an IRONMAN “at some point.” The Briton did not want to specify dates, but he did make it clear that:

"I don't know if I want to do it to be competitive or just to finish it, but I want to try it.".

One of the events that he is particularly excited about is IRONMAN Leeds, his hometown, which will be held for the first time on July 27, 2025. However, he admits that the proximity of some supertri events to the date of the Ironman may complicate his participation. However, he leaves the door open:

"It would be perfect to do it at home, although I don't know if it's the best option for my first Ironman. Still, you never know.. "

Training tips and philosophy

In the same live broadcast, Jonny answered questions from his followers and shared some key points about his training philosophy:

  • Protecting hard sessions: Brownlee emphasizes the importance of staying fresh for those key workouts that provide the greatest benefit.
  • High weekly loads: can reach 25 km of swimming, 500 km of cycling and 100 km of running, plus 2 sessions in the gym.
  • Maintain the base: He claims that less than 10% of his workouts are at high intensity, focusing mainly on aerobic rhythms.
  • Learn from mistakes: like when he forgot to hydrate in Gran Canaria or when he didn't adapt his position well on the time trial bike.

This honesty when it comes to recognizing mistakes and wanting to learn from them makes him a very approachable figure, especially for amateur triathletes who seek to progressively improve and see that even professionals can “make mistakes” and continue to grow.

Although 2024 was not its best year, everything indicates that in 2025 will return with renewed energy and a more balanced approach, combining the passion for competition with the desire to enjoy every kilometre travelled.

The mix of middle distance, super tri and the prospect of completing an Ironman in the near future, make its calendar be as attractive as possible for fans.
