Kat Matthews, the first IRONMAN Pro Series champion
- A $200.000 prize recognizes his efforts during the season.
- The British woman wins the title after a year of consistency and great results.
- Jackie Hering and Lotte Wilms complete the historic women's podium.
Kat matthews has written her name in triathlon history by becoming the first winner of the IRONMAN Pro Series.
With this victory, the British woman takes home a check for 200.000 dollars, after an exceptional season marked by consistency.
The World Championships in New Zealand were the last chance for professional triathletes to score points for the overall classification of the IRONMAN Pro Series.
Matthews, who came in second with 17.836 points, needed a good result to overtake American Jackie Hering, who led the standings.
Her second place finish, just 1 minute and 15 seconds behind race winner Taylor Knibb, earned her the points she needed to climb to the top of the rankings and secure the IRONMAN Pro Series title.
Hering, the leader until then, had to settle for second place overall.
Despite a strong season with four podium finishes and an IRONMAN European Championship title, her performance in Taupō was not enough to keep her lead. Dutchwoman Lotte Wilms completed the IRONMAN Pro Series podium.
