Kerman Alonso and Carolina Fernández win the MTRI Alicante

1.300 triathletes in the first Mediterranean Triathlon venue

This weekend a new day of the popular triathlon circuit of the Mediterranean has been inaugurated and it has done so in the city of Alicante, with nearly 900 participants.

590 corresponded to supersprint and sprint distance, and 250 to the school categories (children, cadets and youth) that carried out their school aquathlon, within the Valencian Community Sports Games, scoring for the regional phase.

The first hours of the start of the weekend were uncertain due to the rain that has been threatening each of the days.

The start on Friday afternoon with the delivery of numbers was accompanied by some organizational changes, as well as the cancellation of the face-to-face briefing. Although it is true, the triathletes responded with enthusiasm to the weekend and 75% of the numbers of the first day were withdrawn.

After the start of the male federated supersprint distance after 8.15 am, the rest of the groups started on Saturday, until completing each discipline.

The supersprint would be followed by the sprint to finish in the aquathlon. The aquathlon is the only competition on the first day that the rain did not respect. The male youth schoolchildren already came out of the water at the beginning of the storm, and accompanied by water, the female youth, cadets and children would continue to compete.

School aquathlon classification

As usual, women had a special role in MTRI and more so on a Saturday designed to be released, not only because of the shorter distance but also because of the possibility of taking the test accompanied, which encourages friends, family... to join to the triathlon.

About 26% of the participation of the entire weekend has been female. In this sense, the couples modality left us moments to remember with subsequent podiums made up of father and daughter, friends or real couples who shared the challenge of the triathlon in Alicante in various ways, highlighting not only the modality itself, but above all the possibility of sharing the start between the sexes or competition at the same time, something that is not possible in the conventional triathlon format.

Let us also remember that to the competition with drafting allowed all weekend, the application of the popular Fetri triathlon Regulations was added on Saturday, which meant the possibility of competing with BTT in both distances (supersprint and sprint) as well as jumping into the water with a bare torso or bikini, something totally prohibited on the other hand on the second day of MTRI Alicante, for the Olympic distance.

Second day with podium for Carolina Fernández, CT Arena Alicante, and Kerman Alonso, UA Triathlon

The second day was reserved for the Olympic distance with 450 registered, a lot of nerves to face those 1500 m of water, 40 km of bike and 10 km of running.

The day dawned spectacular on Postiguet Beach, it looked like a real swimming pool. The triathletes would swim 2 laps, going out to the sand to do the turn after the first lap. Joan Muñoz from Club Triatló Gandia accompanied by Miguel Benito from the UA Triathlon would come out of the water in first position.

The head of the race would not abandon her. Adding to them Kerman Alonso, also from the UA Triathlon, as well as Pedro de la Torre, the triathlete of the Albacete INGTEAM Triathlon Club. The podium would go to Kerman Alonso.

The second and third male position would be for Miguel Benito and Pedro de la Torre. The departure of the girls would take place after 9 in the morning.

The Triathlon Arena Club triathlete, Carolina Fernández, stood out from the beginning in the top positions. The triathlete entered the finish line with more than 5 'advantage over her competitors.
