Lionel Sanders: No goals, just having fun in Kona 2024

Lionel Sanders, the Canadian triathlete known for his motto “No Limits,” has generated expectations around his participation in the World Championship HOMBRE DE HIERRO from Kona 2024. Sanders, who in 2017 was runner-up in the Hawaiian race, arrives with a new approach: the fun.

With the race just over two weeks away, the 36-year-old triathlete has announced that he has not set any specific goals for this edition.I don't have any goals, really, I don't have any goals," hSanders said in his latest Kona video blog.

“I have never done a race that I didn't want to win, every race I have done in my life, every competition of any kind, I have wanted to win.

Of course, I want to win, yes. But my goals, I don't have any. I'm just having fun.”.

This change in mentality, according to Sanders, is due to the evolution that the sport of triathlon has experienced since 2017.

The Canadian acknowledges that the athletes who dominate the current scene present an unprecedented level of performance, with no weak points. The guys at the top now have no weaknesses. I do have one weakness, my swimming is bad. If I were to repeat that performance [from 2017] now, I could reach the Top 10.“, he confesses.

Sanders He is aware that he will have to overcome a considerable deficit in swimming and is realistic in assuming that he will not be able to reach the head of the pack in the cycling segment.

“¿Be at the head of the race in the bike? That would mean for me an average of 330/340 watts to reach Sam Laidlow. It's not realistic. I just understand my body much better than before, there's no room for that kind of stupidity.", it states.

Rather than worrying about other competitors, Sanders will focus on developing his own career.Getting to the head? What does that mean? But who is in the head?

Now, the people in the lead, you're not going to catch them if they're five minutes ahead of you in the water. No, that would be silly; if you want to have your best race, don't worry about the others.

I think it's an advantage for a guy like that. laidlow “He can get out in the lead and be so strong on the bike because he doesn’t care about the others. He’s running his own race, he’s doing it in the lead.”.

Sanders He arrives in Kona with a renewed perspective, ready to enjoy the challenge and demonstrate the potential that his motto “No Limits” has given him.

The 2024 edition of the IRONMAN Kona It promises to be one of the most exciting, with the participation of several IRONMAN champions, such as the Norwegians Kristian Blummenfelt y Gustav Iden, and Sam Laidlow, the current champion, and Patrick Lange.
