The executive board of the International Olympic Committee (COI) approved yesterday that the Paris Olympics will have 3 triathlon events, the men's and women's individual triathlon and the mixed relay event, although the quota of athletes will remain the same , 110.

"World Triathlon had requested that the IOC include two more events, in addition to increasing the athlete quota, as we strongly believe that triathlon can have an even larger presence at the Olympics.

After many discussions with the IOC Sports department, we understand that this move was simply not feasible at this time, as most sports reduce the number of athletes who will compete in Paris. ”, Explained the World Triathlon President and IOC Member, Marisol Casado.

The IOC wants to introduce the Eliminator format

"We are happy and proud that the Mixed Relay remains on the Olympic program, and we will continue to work so that we can have more events and increase the quota of athletes for Los Angeles 2028.

Most of the sports in the Program have seen a reduction in their quota, being Triathlon one of the few sports that maintains its number of competing athletes, currently established at 110 -55 men and 55 women-.

Paris is committed to equality

The Paris 2024 Games will have exactly 50 percent male and female participation, following the gender equality already achieved for Tokyo 2020, which will have 48,8 percent female participation.

The Program will also have an increase in mixed events, from 18 to 22, compared to Tokyo 2020. Skateboarding, sport climbing, surfing and break are confirmed as additional sports from a proposal of Paris 2024. The Breaking will make its Olympic debut.

The IOC Executive Committee endeavored to provide more reassurance for athletes at this difficult time, in keeping with the IOC and Paris 2024 Organizing Committee 'athletes first' approach.
