Lourdes Oyarbide and Pedro López, winners of the general time trial in the first edition of the Vuelta Ciclista a Lanzarote
La Lanzarote Cycling Tour has celebrated its second and final stage, thus culminating a first edition that has been a great success.
At the goal of Club La Santa, Lourdes oyarbide y Pedro López were declared winners of the overall time trial by adding up the times of the three climbing time trial sections of the event, the first cycling race that covers the entire island and is part of the UCI “Cycling for all” calendar.

On this day, starting in Puerto del Carmen, the more than 500 cyclists faced 74 kilometres, with a cumulative positive gradient of more than 1.000 metres, and travelled through characteristic enclaves in the south and west of the island, such as Playa Blanca and Yaiza.
Throughout the journey, and in each regrouping area, they have been accompanied by hundreds of people who have given colour and atmosphere to every corner of the island.
If in the first stage we were able to enjoy a time trial climb in which Laurens Verluyten and Lourdes Oyarbide won, today's stage included two timed sections that offered a great spectacle.
In the first, 5,3 kilometers long, between Las Casitas and Femes, Alejandro Valverde and again Oyarbide have set the best times in the men's and women's categories, respectively.
The second time trial started from the start of the Timanfaya road and consisted of 12,7 kilometres to Mancha Blanca, with an average gradient of 3%. Abel Rodríguez and, once again, Lourdes Oyarbide, took the victory.
Adding up the times of the three timed sections (the two from today and the one from yesterday), the cyclist from Alava and Pedro López have emerged as the best time trialists.

On the other hand, Gabriel Acosta and Nanna Espensen have achieved the best overall time at the finish line in the male and female categories, respectively. As for the team classification, “Los arrojados” and “¡Qué existencia!” have managed to win in each category.
The Vuelta Ciclista a Lanzarote also had a luxury line-up that included great figures of Spanish cycling such as Alberto Contador, Alejandro Valverde, Carlos Verona, Lourdes Oyarbide and Luis Pasamontes.
Contador said that participating in this type of race “is very nice” because it gives you “the opportunity to ride while chatting and commenting on the places you pass by and anecdotes from the past.” “It’s about enjoying it,” the former cyclist stressed.
Carlos Verona described the event as “a very well-organised event. We are having a good time and sharing what unites us, which is our passion for cycling.”
With a total of 189 kilometres covered, the first edition of the Vuelta Ciclista a Lanzarote culminates two days of cycling, spectacular images, a great atmosphere and unforgettable memories that have united the seven municipalities of the island and thus begins a legacy that is set to continue growing.
The festive atmosphere, the participation of everyone and the passion for cycling and sport in a unique location like Lanzarote have been a constant in this opening of the race.
The event has mobilised more than 300 people, including organisers, volunteers and security. In addition, it has had the support of the main local and regional public institutions, such as the Government of the Canary Islands, the Cabildo de Lanzarote, Promotur Turismo de Lanzarote, Lanzarote Sports Destination by Turismo Lanzarote, the seven town councils on the island and other private sponsors who give a great boost to the sporting calendar of the Canary Islands.
Sporting events of this level, supported by institutions and with the experience and leadership of Club La Santa behind them, contribute to Lanzarote receiving top-quality tourism and providing added value to various sectors.
Following the success of this first edition, it is confirmed that the event will be held in 2025 on October 4 and 5.
From today, the island is already focusing its attention on the upcoming sporting events organized by Club La Santa: the night run and International Running Challenge arriving in November.
