"I think the season started much better than I expected. I had a little break and I thought: 'Oh, this is the perfect opportunity to race IRONMAN France on the same course as the World Championships and validate my position.'
I said to myself, ‘Maybe I’ll just do it.’ It was one of those decisions where I thought, ‘I think I’ll regret it if I don’t give myself the opportunity to be on the starting line.’”.
A few days before the race, Charles-Barclay He believes he made the right decision, although he acknowledges that the route in Nice will be a unique challenge.
"I think it was a really good decision and definitely as the reigning champion you feel like you have to be there. The route definitely scared me a little bit but I think it's important to do things that scare you. It takes you out of your comfort zone and makes you a better athlete. I think it's going to be a great race.".
