Melilla to host the European Sprint Triathlon and Mixed Relay Championships in 2025

The autonomous city of Melilla will face a historic challenge on the weekend of July 19 and 20, when it will host the first European Sprint Triathlon and Mixed Relay Championships in Elite, Under-23 and Junior categories.
This event represents an important step for national triathlon, as it reinforces Spain's position as a leading venue for top-level European competitions.
Thanks to the experience acquired during more than a decade of organizing international events, Melilla has demonstrated its ability to host events of the highest prestige.
This time, with the collaboration of the Spanish Triathlon Federation (FETRI) And European Triathlon Union (ETU), the city hopes to provide an unforgettable spectacle for athletes, fans and media.
RTVE's live coverage will allow the general public to follow the careers of the continent's leading figures.
A Weekend of Action and a Continental Title
During the two days of competition, the best triathletes in Europe will meet in Melilla with the aim of achieving the European title in the sprint distance.
The elite category will be the main event, but there will also be important events for the Under-23 and Junior categories, reinforcing the idea that this event represents a qualitative leap for triathlon in the region.
The sprint format, with 750 metres of swimming, 20 kilometres of cycling and 5 kilometres of running, makes the events highly explosive. A single mistake can put an athlete out of contention for the medals.
Mixed Relay and Television Support
The test of Mixed Relay (in Elite/Under-23 and Junior categories) will play a key role in this weekend of sport.
This format involves teams of two men and two women, who complete a mini-triathlon before passing the baton to the next person.
Much of the action will be broadcast live on RTVE, bringing the event even closer to the public and consolidating the importance of the competitions held in Melilla.
A Balance Sheet of International Participation
Last season, the Triathlon European Cup held in Melilla brought together almost 200 athletes from 23 countries, including a large participation of Spanish athletes.
On that occasion, Frenchwoman Emma Lombardi and Briton Cameron Main took the victory, demonstrating the competition and high level that exists on the European circuit.
Renato Bertrandi, President of Europe Triathlon, has given a very positive assessment of the choice of Melilla as the venue for these European Sprint and Mixed Relay Championships.
According to him, the city offers both an attractive sporting venue and a strong commitment to safety and environmental protection. From his perspective, it is a unique opportunity to bring the triathlon family together and raise the level of sporting practice even further on a continental scale.
Commitment of the Spanish Triathlon Federation
The Spanish Triathlon Federation once again demonstrates its involvement in the organisation of continental events, contributing with its experience and constant effort.
Their role, together with the support of the Government of Melilla and the European Triathlon Union, has been key to creating a competition framework where sporting level and social responsibility go hand in hand.
Beyond Sport: A Local Boost
The holding of the European Sprint Triathlon and Mixed Relay Championships in Melilla is not only great news for the world of triathlon, but also for the city and its population.
The arrival of competitors, coaches and fans is expected to have a positive effect on the local economy, with hotel occupancy, catering and services booming during the event.
For this reason, the success of the organisation will have a very positive impact on the image of Melilla as a tourist and sporting destination.
The media impact and support from international organisations make the city a benchmark, and is a great incentive for it to continue supporting the continuity of competitions of this magnitude.
